Biography

Margaret Thornley Graham was born on Sunday, June 21, 1846, in Allegheny City, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. Her parents were Harrison Graham (Thursday, December 17, 1818 - Friday, September 22, 1854) and Elizabeth Thornley Graham (Monday, January 12, 1818 - Thursday, September 23, 1897). She married Henry Augustus Spangler (Thursday, September 10, 1840 - Sunday, November 25, 1928) on Saturday, August 27, 1864, in Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. They had three children: Harrison Graham Spangler (Thursday, September 13, 1866 - Friday, June 5, 1942), Mary Graham Spangler (1868-1869), Elizabeth Thornley Spangler Frye (Thursday, October 14, 1875 - Thursday, November 19, 1970).

The Pittsburgh Weekly Gazette, Sunday, February 22, 1903, reported that Mrs. Henry Spangler of Bellevue, hosted a Washington party attended by sixty guests at her home . The reception hall, parlor, and dining rooms, in which the tables were placed, were decorated in red, white, and blue. The souvenirs presented to each guest and the refreshments also carried out the anniversary idea.

Margaret passed away on Monday, March 8, 1920, while wintering in Avon Park, Highlands County, Florida. She is interred with her husband at Union Dale Cemetery in Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania.
