Biography

Samuel Graham is a member of Clan_Graham.

Samuel John Wiley Graham was born on August 6, 1852 in Warwick, Arthabaska, Canada East, United Province of Canada, the youngest son of John Graham and Elizabeth Wiley.

In 1861, nine-year-old Samuel and his Presbyterian family lived in Warwick, Arthabaska, Quebec. His father was a farmer and blacksmith who came to Canada from County Tyrone, Ireland.[1]

By 1870, his family had moved to America, settling in the 160 acres of land his father had purchased in the northeast quarter of Section 22 in Fremont Township, Saginaw, Michigan. There, Samuel lived with his parents, sister Amy, and brother Richard in a house situated on the eastern border of the property, along what is now South Raucholz Road. Up the road at the corner of Lakefield and Raucholz was the Nelson schoolhouse and living across the road at the same corner was James Marks Graham, father of Samuel's sister-in-law.[2][3]

Samuel was 22 when he married Cora Elizabeth Nelson on May 17, 1875 in Saint Charles, Michigan.

Samuel and Cora had three children, the eldest of whom died stillborn, unnamed, on Feburary 1, 1877, a day after his birth.[4][5]

In 1880, he and his wife were living on their home on the southeast quarter of his father's land with their year-old daughter Dora.[6]

Burial: Fremont Township Cemetery, Fremont Township, Saginaw County, Michigan[7]

Township Supervisor Samuel J. W. Graham was 61 when he passed away of neuralgia of the heart at his family home at 8 o'clock Saturday, January 13, 1917. He was one of the most widely known and highly respected pioneer residents of Fremont Township and the entire County of Saginaw mourned his sudden death.

On Wednesday afternoon, there was a substantial collection made with which was purchased a floral tribute. His funeral took place Friday afternoon at 1 o'clock at his home, from where his body was carried to the Methodist church for the service. His pallbearers were six of the members of the board of supervisors and he was buried in Fremont cemetery.
