Biography
Mattie was born in 1898 about 7 miles north of Arnold, Nebraska, in the sand hills of Custer County in a sod house at the foot of Powell Canyon. She was named for her Aunt Mattie (Martha Jane), because her sister, Stella, who was just 2 1/2 years older than her called out "oh, let's name her Aunt Matt." They thought her pretty smart to say that, so it stood. Several years later, when Aunt Matt visited, she said that her name was really Martha Jane, and Mattie regretted the fact that Martha wasn't her actual name too.
She passed away in 1995 at the age of 97.
