John was born in 1850, at St Lukes, London. He is the son of John Graham, a soldier and Elizabeth a washer woman.
John's father John was killed during the Crimean war in 1854.
John's parents were married in a non-conformist church and brother Joseph was also baptised in a non conformist church. St Lukes was a non-conformist area of London in 1850 and not far from Wellington Barracks, where his father was likely based at the time of his birth. A baptism for John is yet to be found but there are 2 possible civil registrations for him in London.
Family stories state that John's mother remarried and moved to Ireland with her husband. His brother Joseph when into service as a page and later relocated to Lancashire, There is no record of John doing the same.
John does not appear in English or Irish census records after 1851. There is a 5 year old John, son of John who passed away in Cumbria in 1854. It is very likely this John, but more information is required for confirmation.
