Biography

This biography is a rough draft. It was auto-generated by a GEDCOM import and needs to be edited.

Note by Keith Jeffery: There are two dates given in various documents for this marriage, 2 Jun 1785 and 4 Jun 1785. No PR has yet been located for it. In the British Newspaper Archive, there is an a marriage notice in the Hereford Journal of 9 June 1785 as follows: "At Kensington, Edward Knatchbull, Bart of Mersham Hatch, in the county of Kent, to Miss Frances Graham, second daughter of Governor Graham."

Governor Graham was John Graham, Lieutenant Governor of Georgia, North America. He was a significant property owner and slave holder in that State. His wife was Francis Crooke of St Kitts, a descendant of the Cunyngham family. He was living in tumultuous times for the North American colonies and, being a royalist, his times were more tumultuous than most. He was detained and all his properties confiscated around the time of the American revolution. He was born John Grahame Pyott at Dunbar, Scotland 5 Nov 1733 to Alexander & Eleanor nee Stevenson. Alexander Pyot(t) has the following entry in the Fasti Ecclesiae Scoticanae:

"ALEXANDER PYOT (PYOTT), probably son of James P., Montrose; educated at Marischal College, Aberdeen; M.A. (1714); schoolmaster of Benholme 1716; chaplain to John, Marquis of Tweeddale; licen. by Presb. of Dunbar 8th Nov. 1722; ord. to Carriden 29 Oct. 1725; pres. by John, Duke of Roxburghe; trans. and adm. 24th Oct. 1733; so great was the opposition that on the day of induction the church doors were found locked , and entry had to be effected by the vestry window. He died 26th Mar. 1765. Col. Gardiner was his guest for two nights preceding the Battle of Prestonpans. Pyot was the subject of the satirical Memoirs of Magopico,by Simon Haliburton, chaplain to the 1st Foot. He marr. (1) 17 June 1726, Eleanor (died 1st Aug. 1742), daugh of Robert Stevenson , merchant, and had issue, who assumed the name of Graham - Susan, born 1727 (marr. -- Robinson); Katherine, born 30th Dec. 1729 (marr. James Begbie, surgeon, Haddington); Anna born 10th Dec. 1731; John, Deputy Governor of Georgia, born 5th Nov. 1733; James, born 8th Feb. 1737: (2) 3rd March 1752, Rebecca Thomson.-- [Carlyle's Autob., Miller's Hist.]"

In John Graham's will (PCC, 1791) he mentions his youngest daughter Charlotte Cunningham Graham and appoints Sir Edward Knatchbull, his son-in-law, as one of the executors. This confirms Frances as one of his daughters. Another daughter, Eliza, is named in the Probate. He died at St Lawrence, Kent in 1791 and was buried at St Paul's, Canterbury, Kent on 19 Feb 1791.

Frances Graham (nee Crooke) died at St Lawrence, Kent in 1808 and mentions the following children in her will (PCC 1808, the will is difficult to read): Alexander Graham, Charles Clark Graham, Richard Graham, Eleanora Graham, Susan Graham, June Graham, Charlotte Graham, Elizabeth Cage wife of Charles Cage, late daughter Francis Graham who married Sir Edward Knatchbull, Baronet. It's likely that all were born in Savannah, Georgia. She was buried at St Paul's, Canterbury on 13 Apr 1808 aged 68.
