Hey John,

Thank you for all the merging. I was wondering how things could be made simpler, such that the merge with two different LNAB actually will result in a merge into the correct LNAB. See eg your merge https://www.wikitree.com/index.php?title=Bremer-160&diff=186457288&oldid=181319570 and my post https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/1668855/merge-direction-still-not-working-when-lnab-are-different

Did you actively choose an LNAB? Was my note visible? Should I have worded it differently?

My claim is that the merge screen does not take the proposed direction into account, such that is forced the merger to look at that direction and actively choose otherwise. Was that the case here?

Thanks, Michel

Hello John. Congratulations on your Connect-a-Thon success. I have a somewhat critical suggestion for those times you use the WikiTree Sourcerer extension. Background: The Sourcerer extension tool is formulated for biographical inline source reference citations in support of specific genealogical events. For example, when noting a birth the Sourcerer extension tool is then user prompted to create the inline citation. The tool's mark-up code is formatted for this specific placement in the profile bio.

The method you appear to currently use is to make a bio. without inline referenced source citations. Instead, using the Sourcerer's extension tool (which uses mark-up code relevent within the bio. section only) you list each individual source, (extracted and coded by the automated tool) after the biography's section called :

Sources <reference />

Unfortunately this source reference placement, meant for inline citations, trigger database errors which don't go away until manually corrected. If my explanation has not helped clarify your understanding please ask for help from myself or anyone in Ales group of talented Data Doctor's, or any of the project leaders you work with. Sincerely, Leigh Anne

Hi Jack -

Just wanted to let you know that I sent you an email about WTx. It is no longer supported and used on WT. All your profiles are being added without the required template and coming up as errors.

For the Thons, a full source is now required. A link to an Ancestry Tree or FamilySearch Profile is great but a full source has to be included.

Thanks for all your hard work!

Hi John,

Thanks for all your work on WikiTree. I noticed that you have begun adding profiles for the pre-1700 ancestors you have found in your search. Congratulations on finding records back that far!

Since you are now back in the time period when many people can be descended from those ancestors, we need more details in your source area. As collaborative genealogists, we need to tell each other our sources so that we can work together to assess the relative reliability of the source and the evidence it contains.

Profiles on other websites may include sources but are not sources themselves. If reliable sources are in those profiles, please bring citations for the sources to the profiles you are creating. If not, please research first before creating pre-1700 profiles.

Thanks,

Debi

John,

You have been busy proposing mergers of the Jeremiah Brewer Phillips, Sr. family of Chatham, North Carolina. I am one of the profile managers for one of the proposed profile mergers as my ancestor. You proposed the merger at 2:42 pm yesterday, 7 June 21, and by 18:49 which is 6:49 pm on THE SAME DAY you merged the profiles NOT EVEN giving the profile managers enough time to respond at all. Please explain why you merged the Jeremiah Brewer Phillips, Sr. profiles ANYWAY in only about 4 hours of time from your proposed merger when the profiles for the supposed undocumented wife Elizabeth Ann Pearcy has so many notes attached as to her existence and validity as wife starting 3 months ago? You stated she was the same wife as "Ann" my profile page as his wife. Do you have a marriage record for Jeremiah Brewer Phillips, Sr.? Do you have a record of her family living in Chatham, North Carolina, like a deed record for her parents? Elizabeth Ann Pearcy is questioned as being born for she has no English Birth/christening record as her supposed siblings in England. But you connected the profiles anyway with her as a spouse without providing the profile managers time to respond. Please do not merge any of my profiles I manage, I wish to make sure of the accuracy for the merger and complete it myself.

Re: Byrd

Hello John; I received a notice of request to merge my ancestor Elizabeth Sawyer (Byrd-5157) and Elizabeth Byrd (Byrd-4908) last month. I have been very ill for the past month so I was not able to review and compare the two profiles you notified me about until today. When I tried to compare the two, a banner came up on the page which said that you had already completed the merger (without my permission). John, I see that you do a lot of independent mergers of other people's profiles and that there have been mistakes made on some profiles managed by others, thus, upsetting several people. I appreciate when someone notifies me of work needed on my profiles: however, I am now requesting that in the future you not alter or attempt the merge any of my ancestor profiles that I manage. I have been researching my ancestors and their family branches for many years and would like to attend to these matters myself. Just remember that when you contact a person regarding a merger or other request, you don't know what is going on with them or why they may not be able to get back to you as timely as you wish. Patience is a virtue that is much needed in these matters....especially in the middle of a Covid pandemic!

Hi John,

I see from the other posts that you are in the habit of conducting unauthorised merges, presumably for your own satisfaction, without contacting the relevant profilers first to see if there are any issues. Please do NOT do this in future, certainly not with my profiles. I have just gone in and corrected the mess you made of the Bio on the Arthur Symmonds profile. Thanks, Rob

posted by Robert Kittle
Hi John, I am not sure why you have merged the Symmonds/Symmons profiles without contacting the profiler first? (me!) There has been a lot of confusion with the names, as there was an error in some of the source Census documentation. May be ok, but I would like to have had a look at it first. It is only spelt with a "d".

We have a problem with Joseph Nettles vs Wiliam Joseph Nettles. You've merged the wrong people. This is an extremely complicated family line at this exact junction. I don't even know where to begin to straighten it out at this point or if it can ever be straightened out. J Mary Thornley was the second wife of Joseph Nettles not William Joseph Nettles. They had a son, Joseph Nettles who married second to Ann Riley. They had a son Thomas Alexander Nettles. Thomas Alexander Nettles married first wife Martha Robbins. They had a son William Joseph Nettles.

Going back to George Nettles 1714-1799, there are three consecutive generations of Joseph Nettles, then Thomas A Nettles, then William Joseph Nettles. I know this because I have gone to great effort to work with a 101 year old descendant of Thomas Alexander Nettles who has researched her lineage for at least 70 years.

Help me get this straight, please. And don't use FamilySearch for a source; that was your first mistake.

Hi John,

I see you merge a lot of profiles. That's great. Are you volunteering as an Arborist?

Be sure to merge the bios when you merge the profiles. That's the best time to know which data which came from which sources. It will get mixed up in a merge if there are general sources instead of footnotes.

Hi John,

Thanks for taking responsibility for the Orphaned Profiles. This After Adopting Orphans FAQ explains the special attention adopted profiles will sometimes need from their profile managers. One quick way to find the profiles you adopted is by searching your Contributions List for the word "adopted" and "manager." You can find a quick link to your Contributions List in the My WikiTree dropdown menu.

Let me know if you have any questions on how to find and record sources, merge duplicates, clean up GEDCOM biographies, and interpret the Suggestions report. I'm here to help!
