Gennaro was born about 1883. He is the son of Francesco Gramsci and Giuseppina Marcias. His famous brother was the Italian Marxist and political prisoner, Antonio Gramsci.

Gennaro became a soldier, whose time in Turin on the mainland made him a militant socialist.

Gennaro settled in Cagliari, Sardinia, where he became a white-collar worker after his military service in Turin. After 1906 he began to send socialist pamphlets to his younger brother Antonio back home.

Antonio Gramsci completed secondary school in Cagliari, where he lodged with his militant elder brother Gennaro.
