Biography

Samuel Grundy or Grandy the Younger lived at Edwardstown, one of his father's properties, until he inherited the Ballyconnick estate. Edwardstown is in the Parish of Ballyconnick. He married, 29 April ("2nd month") 1680, at Kilmorrow, County Wicklow, Anne Wickham (or Whigam), born 9 January 1661/2 at The Rock, County Wicklow, daughter of John and Elizabeth (Coleman) Wickham. The Wickhams were also Quakers. John Wickham was the son of Richard and Elizabeth Wickham, of Shannington, Gloucestershire. The Wickham family lived at Kilmurry, County Wicklow.

Marriage in the Quaker community required the approval of the entire “meetings” of both men and women. And this approval needed to be requested twice. Since Samuel and Anne came from different counties, approval of both sets of meetings was needed. In the Wexford meeting records we read the following:

“Samuel Grundy and Anne Wickham have presented themselves and signified their intention of Marriage to this meeting, and it is signifyed that they have their parents consent, therefore Friends of Wicklow and Wexford are desired to make what further Enquiry about their Cleerness [sic] as they see meet, and to take Care to get a Certificate from his parents and send it to this meeting at their second presentation.”

“Samuel Grandy” was a defendant in a Court of Chancery case brought in 1703 by Thomas Champion against Samuel, Henry Hillary, William Sandwith and Henry Hatton. The details of this case not longer exist.

On 10 June 1710, "Samuel Grundy the Elder and Samuel Grundy the Younger, both of Ballyconnick, Gentlemen", mortgaged Ballyconnick to Benjamin Radford of Gurteene, County Wexford, for £230, with interest at eight per cent per annum. On 10 July 1718, the same persons (surname now spelled "Grandy") increased the mortgage to £457 with interest at £6.13.4 per cent. On 10 May 1720, they sold the property outright to John Cliffe of New Ross, Esq., for £690.

Samuel and Anne then apparently left the Ballyconnick area. In 1722, they were living at Ballynapierce, in the Parish of St. John's, County Wexford. Nothing further is known about them after this date.

Samuel the Younger and Anne had thirteen children. Of these, only two sons, Samuel 3rd and John, and one daughter, Elizabeth, are known to have married and had children.
