Biography

Mathurin Granger was born on February 12, 1740 in Rivière-aux-Canards, Acadie, Colony of Nova Scotia, according to his own testimony at Belle-Ile-en-Mer in 1767. [1] His parents were Claude Granger and Brigitte LeBlanc.

On 5 September 1755, Mathurin was imprisoned along with hundreds of other Acadian men at the St. Charles des Mines church in Grand-Pré. On a list of prisoners, he was said to live in the village des Granger (Rivière-aux-Canards). No children or livestock were recorded for him on Winslow's list since he was still single. He was required to prepare for deportation within 30 days. [2][3]

On 27 October 1755, he was deported to Virginia aboard one of the 14 ships that departed on that day. The colony was not welcoming to these Frenchmen who spoke a different language and worshiped differently. They were also considered a financial burden so the following spring they sent the Acadians on to England. He left Virginia for England in May 1756, aboard the Fanny Bovey. [3]

Mathurin married Marie Genevieve Theriot, daughter of Jean Thériot and Marie Daigre, on 8 October 1760, in Falmouth, Cornwall, England. [4]

Their children were:

  1. Élisabeth Geneviève Granger
  2. Anastasie Prudence Granger
  3. Marie Modeste Granger
  4. Joseph Augustin Granger
  5. Jean Joseph Granger
  6. Marie Blanche Granger
  7. Simon Granger
  8. Paul Marie Granger
  9. Marie Francoise Granger
  10. Louis Mathurin Granger
  11. Jean Marie Granger

At the end of the Seven Years’ War in February 1763, the Acadian people were given passage to France. On 26 May 1763, Mathurin and his family sailed from England to France on the ship La Fauvette. [3]

Mathurin Granger, native of Acadie, passed away September 12, 1780 in Paimboeuf, Bretagne (now Loire-Atlantique) at the age of approximately 35 years [5]
