The Barrington baptisms of Joseph's children (see the one for Charlotte below) record that Joseph was native of Heugh. While there are several places in the North East of England called Heugh, it's likely that this one was within the parish of Esh, hence not being more specific.
On 2 Jul 1750 Joseph Granger, of Heugh, son of John & Hannah Granger was baptised at Esh, St Michael. [1]
On 3 Dec 1798 Joseph Granger (of the parish of Lanchester) married Elizabeth Colpitts, both of this chapelry, by licence at Barnard Castle, St Mary. Witnesses: Ann Colpitts; Robt. Stringer; George Colpitts. [2]
On 8 Jun 1806 Charlotte Granger, of Flass, 4th daughter of Joseph Granger (Commission land surveyor, native of Heugh) by his wife Elizabeth Colpitts (native of Barnard Castle, daughter of Thomas & Ann Colpitts) was baptised at Esh, St Michael. [3]
In 1813, Joseph and Elizabeth's son Joseph aged 6 was buried at St Oswald in the city of Durham, aged 6. They were described as being of Old Elvet.
Date of will was 16 Dec 1816. Date of probate was 5 Feb 1817. [4]
When Joseph's wife Elizabeth died in 1836, she was described as a widow, so he died before then. At her death, she was of Old Elvet and was buried at St Oswald in the city of Durham.
On 3 Jul 1815 Joseph Grainger, of Old Elvet, age: 65, land surveyor was buried at St Oswald in the city of Durham. [5] However, this is probably incorrect since Joseph was named in his mother-in-law's will written on 16 Dec 1816 so he can't have been deceased then. There is another burial for Joseph Granger who died 30 Jun 1817 aged 67 and buried at Durham, St Oswald. [6] It seems at least possible that these burials refer to the same person and that the register entry is in error. The grave marker is most likely to be correct. So the death date would be 30 Jun 1817 and the burial would have been 3 Jul 1817 and not 3 Jul 1815. Several different transcriptions give the burial year as 1815 so it's not a transcription error but perhaps an error on the part of the parish clerk. It would be interesting to know if the Bishop's Transcripts differ from the Parish Register.
