John Grant served with Wilkes County Regiment, North Carolina Militia during the American Revolution.
John Grant was born in 1745 or 1755 in Somerset, England. He immigrated from England to the British Colonies through New York in 1774. He died on Sep 4, 1843 in Wilkes County, North Carolina.[1]
He is listed in the 1840 Census and Pension Roster as having received a Pension for Revolutionary War Service. He may have been in several militia units but first enlisted with the Wilkes County Regiment, North Carolina Militia.[5]
On this __ day of __ 1832 personally appeared in Open Court before the Worshipful County Court of Iredell now sitting John Grant a Resident of Iredell County State of North Carolina, Aged 77 years, who first being duly sworn according to law, doth on his oath, make the following declaration, in order to obtain the benefit of the act of Congress passed June the 7th 1832.
That he entered the service of the United States under the following named officers, and served as herein stated. That he entered the Army under a Draft which he thinks took [place] in the month of July 1782 was mustered in to service at Wilkesboro North Carolina in the month of August following and the company commanded by Captain Jesse Franklin [Jesse Harden Franklin] (since Major, & Governor of North Carolina) we were marched to Ramsour's Mill on Catawba (in Rutherford or Lincoln Counties) we were then commanded by Captain Brevard [Alexander Boulevard] who marched us on to Camden South Carolina where we Joined Colonel Lytle [Archibald Lytle]. We were then marched to Ashley Hill where we Joined General Green [sic, Nathanael Greene] after staying at Ashley Hill a good while we were marched down directly after the British left Charleston and were encamped at James Island near Charleston, where we staid the balance of the time until disbanded. Was discharged by Colonel Lytle. The time of Enlistment was 18 months. Served some longer but does not recollect exactly how much.

Sworn to and subscribed in Open court this 20th day of November 1832.
