Biography

William Grant was the child of Benoni Grant; his mother is unknown [1]. He was born about 1776, probably in New York. His father left scant records in the area when he lived there.

About 1794, William married Lois Burch (other spellings: Burtch, Birch). They had numerous children between 1798 and 1818.

In 1799, William Grant was living in Easton, Washington County, New York. He doesn't appear to have owned any real estate on this tax assessment and his personal assets were set at $60.00 [2].

On 24 Jul 1802, William and Lois signed a lease to rent 112 acres of land in Bolton, Warren County, New York from James Caldwell. Later this part of Bolton became known as Caldwell and, eventually Lake George. In 1802, Bolton was part of Washington County, New York (today it's in Warren County, New York). The yearly rent to be paid was $14.50. From an earlier land record, Benoni Grant, William's father, had some use of this land when he moved to Lake George.[3]

In 1805, William was appointed Pathmaster in Bolton. He and Lois lived there until sometime after the War of 1812 when they moved to Moreau, Saratoga County, New York.

We find William and Lois living in Caldwell in 1810.[4]

In 1816, William witnessed the codicil of General Thomas Rogers. There appears to have been some sort of relationship between the two families. William also named a son, Halsey Rogers, after a son of the General.

Between 1820 and 1825, William and Lois moved across the Hudson River to Fort Edward, Washington County, New York. The 1825 New York State census tells us that William was a farmer. He owned four cows, three horses, six sheep and three hogs.[5][6]

William died in 1828. He, wife Lois and daughter, Polly (Grant) Haight, are buried in the State Street Cemetery in Fort Edward, Washington County, New York: Find A Grave: Memorial #71153617
