Biography

John (Grant) Grant IVth of Freuchie is a member of Clan Grant.

John was the son of James Grant, 3rd of Freuchie and Elizabeth Forbes. [1]

He married, firstly, Lady Margaret Stewart, daughter of John Stewart, 3rd Earl of Atholl and Grizel Rattray, before 19 February 1539. They had issue:

  3. Grissel[1]
  4. Paterick[1]
  5. Elizabeth[1]
  6. Margaret[1]
  7. Katherine[1]
  8. Marjory[1]
  9. Janet, b. 1535[1]
  10. Barbara, b. 1545[1]

He married, secondly, Lady Janet Leslie, daughter of George Leslie, 4th Earl of Rothes, before 8 March 1557/58. THey had issue:

  2. Helen [1]

Baillie (steward) Kinloss Abbey.3 On 25 October 1577 he was granted by charter the Parkhill estate, Fifeshire, following its forfeiture by John Leslie.

He died on 3 June 1585

Chiefs of Grant, Vol 1 p152 for John 4th of Freuchie, says that "His memorial stone was found in the Grant family burying-vault at Duthil, and is now at Castle Grant. It contains the armorial bearings of the Grant and Athole families, impaled for husband and wife, with the dates of deaths of John Grant, his wife Lady Margaret Stewart, and their elder son Duncan Grant.
