Eliza was born around 1827 in the City of Edinburgh, District of St. Cuthbert's, Midlothian, Scotland[1]. She was the daughter of Army Captain in the 32nd Regiment of Foot, John (Grant) and Mary Ann (Watson).

Eliza appears in the Census of 1851 living with her aunt, Frances (Watson) at Parkside Street, in the City of Edinburgh, District of St. Cuthbert's, Midlothian, Scotland[3]. She is still with her aunt, Frances "Fanny" (Watson) with the Census of 1861 at 3 Parkside Street, in the City of Edinburgh. Frances' surname is recorded as being "Walker" in the Census[4].
She disappears from the Census Record of 1871, turning up in 1881, as a widow living with her step-children, James and Annie (Hardie); her aunt, Frances "Fanny" (Watson); Boarder, Jane (Cromar) and Servant, Annie (Fox). Their address is 6 Brighton Place, Duddingston, City of Edinburgh, District of Duddingston and Portobello, Edinburgh County, Scotland[5]. Once again, she disappears from the Census Record of 1891, appearing in the Census of 1901, living with her step-daughter, Annie (Hardie) at 9 Eskside North, in the City of Musselburgh, on the coast of the Firth of Forth, 5 miles east of the City of Edinburgh, Inveresk and Musselburgh District, East Lothian, Scotland[6].
Eliza's occupation is first recorded with the Census of 1881 after the death of her husband, Ebenezer (Hardie). She has become a Lodging House Keeper.
Eliza (Grant) passes away on the 20 May 1908 at 1.05 pm at 49 Joppa Road, Portobello, City of Edinburgh, District of Duddingston and Portobello, Midlothian, Scotland. She was 81 years old and the cause of death was Carcinoma of the Right Breast. Her step-daughter, Elizabeth (Hardie) of 32 Mayfield Road, Edinburgh, was present at the death and informant[7].
