Biography

Archibald bears his fathers name; both were referred to as Arch or Archie. He was born in the family home at Hope Street Geelong Victoria, Australia, on 28 September 1883; to Archibald Grant and Rachel Park.

Baptised on 7 October 1883 at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church Geelong, Victoria. Sponsors were Catherine Farrell and Samuel Walsh.

His confirmation was on 26 March 1893; whilst he was a student at Ashby public School Geelong West; later known as Geelong West Primary School.

Married in 1906; in Melbourne Victoria Australia; had eight children; the last child born in 1923; some months after his death in Queensland Australia. The eight children were named:- Charlotte May [May] Grant, George Grant, William Archibald [Willie] Grant, Hilda Jessie [Jess or Jessie] Grant, Charles [Charlie or Chas] Grant, Bernard Albert [Bern or Bernie] Grant, Harold Leonard [Len or Lennie] Grant and Ruth Grant.

He worked as a carrier, farmer, dairy farmer and labourer; always on the move; seeking better jobs that never came his way. In 1911; he left Victoria with his family; on a coastal steam ship to Brisbane; where, work was available on the new Brisbane Tramway. However, a lengthy strike in 1912, by the Tramway employees caused him to move south; and over the border into New South Wales Hinterland. That was the beginning of a long list of employers' before he finally, moved back to Brisbane, Queensland.

On 28 July 1923 his sudden death; whilst building a tennis court, in Brisbane, Queensland; left his family in poor circumstances.

Buried at Toowong Cemetery, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia; with his wife's ashes; and their son William Archibald Grant.
