RESEARCH NOTES:

The only evidence of JAMES GRANT having been the father of MICHAEL GRANT is an 8 May 1770, Rowan County NC indenture of Michael, age 3, and Rachel, age 12, orphans of JAMES GRANT, deceased, to [Wm] William Grant "'to learn the Art and Mistry of a Weaver. At this point, we have no evidence as to the birth, death, or origins of JAMES GRANT and we are unable to confirm the identity of the William Grant to whom the two children were indentured.

In addition, we are unable to verify that the MICHAEL GRANT named in the 1770 indenture is the same Michael Grant who arrived in Adair County KY by 1812 (at about age 50) and spent the remainder of his life there. The reason for this inability is the absence of evidence about the first 50 years in the life of our Adair County Michael Grant. We do have evidence that he and wife, Jane (Mears) Grant, were the parents of at least nine children, including James, Elizabeth, Sarah Ripley, Mary, John Will, Jane, Eli, Sara Ann, and Martha Ann (Patsy). Jane died in Adair County on 4 Jan 1858 and was listed as a widow. Michael's date of death and place of burial is unknown, but evidence suggests he died sometime after the 24 July 1850 census and before Jane's death in 1858. He is probably buried near son Eli & family at the center of the Grant Cemetery, Glen's Fork KY, but a physical inspection in 2014 did not reveal the location of his grave.

11 August 2016 Marshall K. Grant, 3rd great grandson of Michael Grant

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with James by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with James:
