Biography

Eleazer Grant, born 24 Jun 1748 @ Tolland, Connecticut, was the third child of Esther (Parker) Ladd, but her first child by way of her second husband Ephraim Grant.

Eleazer Grant was Quartermaster 17th Regt., NY militia; 2nd Lieut. 5th Co., 2nd Regt., NY Line.

Eleazer Grant married twice:

1) 12 Nov 1767 Mary Lathrop [b. 1749; d. 20 Apr 1793]; they had 7 children:
  1. Mary Grant, b. 22 Dec 1768; d. 4 oct 1805 @ Verona, New York
  2. Joseph Grant, b. 29 Jan 1771; married 12 Oct 1796 @ Canaan, New York, Minerva Bradley; d. 17 Dec 1854 @ Oswego, New York
  3. Eleazer Grant, b. 19 Feb 1773; d. 4 Feb 1810 @ Canaan, New York
  4. Esther (baptized as Eunice) Grant, b. 24 May 1775; d. 6 Aug 1776
  5. Prudence Grant, b. 18 Oct 1777 @ Canaan, New York; d. 13 Dec 1777
  6. Samuel Grant, b. 7 Nov 1778
  7. Nancy Grant, b. 24 Sep 1781; married Dr. ___ Maine; resided at Utica, New York

The Eleazer Grant family resided @ Pittsfield, Massachusetts 1772-75; his wife joined the church there. His family numbered 9 persons; they removed 1775-77 to New Lebanon, New York.

After his first wife died in April 1793, Eleazer Grant married

2) 4 Nov 1793 @ Coventry, Connecticut, Esther Rose of Coventry, who probably d. 7 Oct 1828 @ Coventry

Per The Grant Family, Capt. Grant was on a committee to draw up a remonstrance against a portion of the new [New York] state constitution; member of the committee of safety 1778; (tax) collector; poormaster; assessor; moderator; commissioner of highways; Justice of the Peace for many years; fence viewer; supervisor; on committee of correspondence to "preserve the free exercise and enjoyment of the inestimable right of suffrage" 1792; an important and influential man; one of the minority in the town who did not become Shakers. Before him was brought on a charge of vagrancy Ann Lee, the founder of the sect, who told him that she would soon hold meetings in his house; not long afterwards she bought the house through a third party, came dancing down the hill with her followers, took possession and held a meeting, and the next day demolished the house.

Eleazer Grant died 13 Mar 1806.
