James Blaine was the firstborn child of Harriet Hays and William David. In his adult life he was known for having a cruel temper, which lost him custody of some of his earliest children as well as ending in divorce with his first wife Mary Kollenborn. To hide the fact of his divorce James insisted that Mormon elders had kidnapped his wife away from him and the Danites had stolen the children.
His farm was accidentally burnt down in his elder years by haystacks which caught fire after receiving a lightning strike. For this tragedy too he blamed the Danites.
