[He] was 11 months old when the family moved from the Tokomairiro district to the Taieri. As "Gladfield" had been bought before his schooling days were over, farming became his occupation and long full days were spent working at both "Clairinch" and "Gladfield".[1]

At 28, on the 3rd of January, 1905, he married Elizabeth Falconer Watson in West Taieri, Otago, New Zealand.[citation needed][1] He lived at Gladfield Farm for two years before moving to Benmore in Southland where in partnership with his brother Charles, he had bought a farm.[1]
At 30, on the 18th of September, 1906, his daughter Ethel was born, in East Taieri, Dunedin, Otago, New Zealand.[citation needed]
At 31, on the 15th of February, 1908, his son Thomas was born, in West Taieri, Dunedin, Otago, New Zealand.[citation needed]
At 33, on the 1st of May, 1910, his daughter Ellen was born in West Taieri, Dunedin, Otago, New Zealand.[citation needed]
At 36, on the 29th of October, 1912, his son Own was born, in Dipton, Southland, New Zealand.[citation needed]

At 38, in 1914, he moved to the Lochiel District and farmed later in Hokonui and Winton, before being appointed in 1918, manager of the Canterbury Seed Company at Leeston, a position he held until his retirement to Christchurch in 1936. On this farm good crops of wheat, barley, oats and peas were grown and at times the Agricultural Department carried out experiments with crops. Sheep were grazed . Robert took a keep interest in the Presbyterian Church and held office as manager, and an elder in each of the districts he lived in, as well as being a member of the choir and a Sunday school teacher. [At the time of publication] he [was] still an elder at St. Pauls Christchurch. To other community activities he gave his time, being chairman of the Leeston School Committee for several years.[1]
At 56, on the 27th of August, 1932, his sister Margaret died, in Outram, West Taieri, Otago, New Zealand, at 63.[citation needed]
At 58 on the 27th of April, 1935, his brother John died, in Wellington, Wellington, New Zealand, at 62.[citation needed]
At 72, on the 17th of May, 1949, his brother Arthur died, in East Taieri, Otago, New Zealand, at 74.[3]
At 75, on the 26th of September, 1951, his son Owen died in Ellesmere, Canterbury, New Zealand, at 38.[4]
At 84, on the23rd of November, 1960, his brother Charles died in Invercargill, Southland, New Zealand, at 93.[citation needed]
At 86, in November, 1962, his brother William died in Christchurch, Canterbury, New Zealand, at 91.[citation needed]
At 90, on the 25th of June, 1966, his brother Edwin died, in Wanganui, Manawatu-Wanganui, New Zealand, at 87.[5]
At 91, on the 13th of December, 1967, he died in The Princess Margaret Hospital, Christchurch, Canterbury, New Zealand. 1967.{ [6]
