Biography

Mariano Grasso is born 24 July 1885 in Caserta, Italy. (Caserta is the name of both the capital city and its province in the Campania region.)

Mariano Grasso appears on line 30 of the manifest of the Napolitan Prince, arriving 30 August 1906 in New York. He is 21, single, from Caserta. Going to Boston, to join his brother in law Luigi Corangelo at E Lathrop Place 311 Hanover St Boston MA.[1]

Mariano Grasso declares his intention to naturalize, to the state of Connecticut, New Haven. He is 24 a laborer, 5’6.5” with light brown hair, blue eyes, weighing 130 # with a fair complexion. Born 24 July 1885 in Caserta Italy, he arrived on the Napolitan Prince. He lives at 19 Summer Pl in New Haven. Sworn 7 September 1909.[2]

In 1910, Mariano Grasso, 25, is a boarder in the home of Giuseppe Milici at 19 Summer Place in New Haven, CT. He immigrated in 1906. He is a laborer in a hardware shop.[3]

Mariano marries Corinda Salzani around 1916. They have six known children: John B. (c. 1917), Frank S. (c. 1918), Vera (1920), Joseph (c. 1923), Anna (c. 1924), and William P. (1927).

Mariano Grasso, born 24 July 1885, living at 259 James St, New Haven, CT, of medium height and build, brown hair and blue eyes, registers for the WWI draft. (The heading on this document in Ancestry says the record came from a collection of Pennsylvania, Prison, Reformatory, and Workhouse Records, 1829-1971.) He is 33 years old, an alien resident. He is a laborer for H. B. Ives Co. at 27 Artisan St, New Haven, CT. His nearest relative is at his home address, Gurinda Salzani Grasso.[4]

In the 1920 federal census of New Haven, CT, taken 7 January, Mariano Grasso heads a household at 259 James Street. Mariano is 34 (b. 1885) and immigrated in 1906. His wife, Curinda, is 25 (b. 1894). Their children at home are John B., 2 years 7 months old (b. Jun 1917), and Frank S., 1 year and 3 months (b. Oct 1918). Curinda and the children were born in CT, and Mariano in Italy. Mariano is a buffer in a window fixture shop.[5]

Vera is born 30 June 1920 in New Haven.[6]

William P. is born in 1927 in Connecticut, most likely in New Haven. Based on his enlistment date in 1945, I estimate William's birth date is on or close to 20 March.[7]

Mariano Grasso of 317 James St. New Haven Ct, from Italy, is naturalized on 10/2/29.[8]

In the 1930 federal census of New Haven, CT, taken 7 April, Mariano Grasso heads a household at 317 James Street. He owns his home, worth $2500. Mariano is 44 (b. 1886) and his wife, Corinda, is 34 (b. 1896). They married about 14 years ago (m. 1916), when he was 30 and she was 20. Their children at home are John, 13 (b. 1917), Frank, 11 (b. 1919), Vera, 9 (b. 1920), Joseph, 7 (b. 1923), Anna, 6 (b. 1924), and William, three years and two months (b. Feb 1927). Corinda and the children were all born in CT. Mariano immigrated in 1907 and is a naturalized citizen. He is a retail merchant in a bakery.[9]

In the 1940 federal census, taken 5 April in New Haven, CT, Mariano Grasso, 54 (b. 1886), born in Italy, heads a household on James St in New Haven with his wife, "Coreana" (Corinda), 44 (b. 1896), and their children. Curinda and the children were all born in CT. The children at home are John, 22 (b. 1918), Frank, 21 (b. 1919), Veda, 19 (b. 1921), Joseph, 17 (b. 1923), Anna, 15 (b. 1925), and William, 13 (b. 1927). Mariano is a naturalized citizen, and the proprietor of a restaurant. John is a plumber for a university. Frank is a laborer in a lumber yard.[10]

Mariano Grasso of 317 James St, New Haven, CT, registers for the WWII draft. He is 56, born in Caserta, Italy on 24 July 1885. His contact is his wife Mrs. Curinda Grasso at the same address. He is 5’7” and 155#, with blue eyes, brown hair, a light complexion, and a scar over the right temple.[11]

William enlists in New Haven, CT, on 20 March 1945 for the duration of the war. He has one year of high school education and works as a chauffeur or driver. He is unmarried.[7]

Death of Mariano

Mariano dies at age 63 (b. 1886) in New Haven on 5 June 1949. This record says he is single.[12]

William is married to Anna Staiano around this time.

Corinda dies on 19 July 1978 in New Haven, CT. She is a widow, age 83.[13]

William is a gangster associated with the crime family headed by Raymond L. S. Patriarca.[14]

William is the underboss of the Patriarca crime family when he is killed[15] at age 62 (b. 1927 in New Haven, CT) on 16 June 1989.[16]

Vera dies at age 83 on 5 March 2007. She did not marry.[6]
