Biography

This profile is part of the Graves Name Study.

DNA testing has proven no DNA connection of John Graves (Sr./ I) to Captain Thomas Graves of VA, but rather to a John Greaves family of Northamptonshire, England.

REBECCA GRAVES, daughter of John Graves and Susanna Dicken was born in Spotsylvania County, Virginia on 4 September 1735. [1] [2]

Rebecca was a legatee in her father's estate of 1747 receiving 140 acres of land "next to her brother Thomas" Graves in Spotsylvania Co., VA. [3]

Rebecca Graves is widely believed to be the second wife of Samuel Brockman II. No marriage records have been located.

Known children of Samuel and Rebecca with their estimated birth records: Jemima Brockman (1754–1828) Sarah "Sally" Brockman (1755–) John Brockman 1756–1823 William Brockman 1757–1829 Susan "Suckey" Brockman (unknown)

Mary Brockman who is believed to be Samuel Brockman's daughter was born in 1745. She most likely was born from his first marriage.

Research Notes

Various publications about the Brockman family refer to Samuel Brockman's wife only as "Rebecca" or (no mention of her maiden name). [4]

On page 107 of William Everett's publication, 'Orange County Virginia Families, Volume III, he writes, Samuel, son of Samuel Brockman and wife Mary, married "Rebecker" by 1744. He died in 1790. Rebecker died in 1814.[5]

Although no marriage records have been found, many attribute Rebecca Graves, as the wife of Samuel Brockman II. However it doesn't seem likely that Rebecca Graves who was born in 1735 married Samuel in 1744. If she was his wife, their marriage date would be closer to 1751 (age 16) or after.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Rebecca by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Rebecca:

I'd like to request a merge of Samuel Brockman b. 1717-1790 Two of them are listed as Rebecca Graves husbands. Seems they are the same?

Graves-1301 and Graves-1618 appear to represent the same person because: See note in Graves-1301. Merge in to Graves-1618.
