Biography

This profile is part of the Graves Name Study.

Sarah Graves is Graves Family Association Gen.191. The first generation. Her parents have not been identified.[1] She was last updated on Jan. 22, 2010.

Originally she was thought to possibly be the daughter of Joseph Graves (abt.1715-abt.1774) [2], but that is now in doubt. His 1774 will does not name a daughter Sarah nor her children. Plus he lived in Orange Co. VA, no mention of Albemarle County. However, multiple descendants of Sarah Graves Israel have DNA matches to descendants of her sister, Mary Graves Cleveland, supporting the long believed relationship.

Research Notes

Jan. 22, 2010: “Sarah Graves (1) was probably born about 1736-40, based on the age of her husband.  She may have been a sister of Mary Graves who married Col. Benjamin Cleveland and was a daughter of Joseph Graves who died in 1774.  Joseph Graves was a brother of Thomas Graves who married Ann Davenport, and both Joseph and Thomas were sons of John Graves of genealogy 270.[1]
July 25, 2019: “Joseph Graves (4) migrated from Orange Co., VA to Rowan Co. or Surry Co., NC prior to 1771, probably 1763-1769. (Surry Co. was formed from Rowan Co. in 1770.) He married Sarah ‑‑‑‑‑‑. He may only have had the one child listed below, since she is the only one mentioned in his will. His will in Surry Co., NC was dated 12 July 1774 and proved in August Court 1774. In it he mentioned his wife Sarah, his daughter Mary, and his son-in-law Benjamin Cleveland. It leaves portions of his estate to his daughter's two sons, Absalom and John Cleveland, and states that Benjamin Cleveland, husband of his daughter, be executor of his estate.”[2] No mention of Sarah or her children.
“The similarity of this family to that of John Graves and Margery Harvey of Randolph Co., NC, is striking.  The Gilliam and Watkins names are in both, and many members of both families moved to Missouri and Indiana.  See also the comments with the record of Sarah Israel (3).[1][3]

  • The husband of Sarah Graves, Michael Israel, fought in the Battle of King's Mountain alongside his wife's sister's husband. Mary Graves husband Col. Benjamin Cleveland, was in charge of the Wilkes County militia that fought at the Battle of Kings Mountain. In addition to the DNA matches that descendants of the two sisters, Sarah Graves Israel and Mary Graves Cleveland have, this supports a relationship. https://www.ncpedia.org/biography/cleveland-benjamin

That she was born and married in Albemarle Co. VA implies she may belong to the family of John Graves and Lucy Adams, daughter of Robert Adams Sr (abt.1689-1740) and Mourning Lewis of Goochland Co. The attached father doesn’t fit. He lived in Orange Co. VA with no known daughter Sarah.

See discussion on John Graves (1712-aft.1747).

Graves-5626 and Graves-1330 appear to represent the same person because: same name and family
