Biography

This profile is part of the Graves Name Study.

He lived in NC, Sequatchie Valley, TN, and Blount and DeKalb counties in AL. According to the Blount and DeKalb Co., AL censuses, he was born in NC, and according to the probate records in the DeKalb Co. courthouse, he died in 1853 in that county. Tradition has it that he was buried in the Providence Hill Cem. there.

John Graves married second Lydia Chaney , widow of John Jacob Chaney, on 8 Oct. 1825 in Blount Co., AL. John Chaney was the son of Jeremiah Chaney and Mary Frances Kirby. According to the 1850 census, recorded 4 Dec. 1850) for DeKalb Co., Lydia was born about 1800 in VA. She died in 1850.

John married a third time, shortly after the death of Lydia, Mary (Roden) Bailey (also known as "Polly"), daughter of John B. Roden and Nancy Braswell, on 17 Dec. 1850 in DeKalb Co., AL. Mary married first William P. Bailey on 30 Nov. 1827 in Blount Co., AL. Mary was born 18 Oct. 1807 in KY, and died after 30 June 1880 when she was recorded on the census with her daughter Susan (Bailey) Dilbeck’s family in DeKalb Co., AL. It is also of interest that a sister of Mary (Roden) Bailey was Martha (Roden) Carns, mother of Mary Jane Elizabeth Carns who married John's grandson, Alexander Graves.

He is found living in Surry Co. next to his father, James Graves, and near his father-in-law, Edward Beeson, in the 1810 census of that county.

By 1815, John Graves no longer appears in the minutes of Surry Co. Court as engaged in any activity, nor does he appear in the 1820 census of Surry Co. This is a fair indication that he was no longer living there.
