Biography

This profile is part of the Graves Name Study.

James was born in 1801. He passed away in 1846.

The family of James Graves, through whom our descent continues from Samuel and Barsheba Graves, is set forth in Ben F. Dixon’s 1932 volume “Our Book”. He was born on August 2, 1801. In the 1880 Federal Census of Stark County Illinois their son Edmund Graves indicated that both his parents were born in North Carolina. This was probably in Chatham County. There James married a woman named Sarah, who was born August 12, 1798 in North Carolina. Her ancestry is uncertain, but numerous genealogies state that her maiden name was Leech, without offering any proof for the claim. In the 1840 Census of Jackson County, where James and Sarah eventually located a Harrison Leech appears in close proximity to the family of Samuel Graves. Records additionally reveal that a George Leech (1756 - 1838) also came from North Carolina to Jackson County, where he died and is buried. Assuming Sarah's maiden name was in fact Leech, these may presumably been relatives of hers.

Shortly prior to 1820 they moved to Ohio with James parents, and a number of related Graves families. There they settled in what was then Jackson County, on parcel of land later included within Vinton County. Government records show that James Graves patented a tract of land in Jackson County described as the West half of the Southwest Quarter of Section 7, Township 9, Range 18 (stated to consist of 90.5 acres) on August 1, 1829, and another tract described as the Northeast Quarter of the Northeast Quarter of Section 13, Township 9, Range 18 on August 5, 1837 consisting of 39.44 acres. The former was in Richland and the latter in Harrison Township, but the sections are actually adjacent to one another. it is uncertain whether this was "our" James Graves or another relative of the same name, but the tracts were close to Salt Springs cemetery where James and Sarah would eventually be buried and close to the area where they lived.

James died in Vinton County on September 11, 1846, and was buried in the Salt Springs Cemetery near Allensville. In the 1850 Federal Census of Vinton County his widow Sarah appears owning real estate valued at $500.00. She died shortly thereafter on December 1st of the same year, and was buried at Salt Springs Cemetery. Stone mark their graves.
