Biography

Richard was born in 1822. He is the son of Robert Graves. and Elizabeth Milner

No Birth Certificate can be traced for Richard. That he existed was first noticed by an entry his mother made in a bubble tree when petitioning the Tasmanian Government regarding land she maintained was granted to her late husband. No name is shown but it states she had four children to Robert Graves. He was finally traced in a document headed “Return of Children having both Parents living in the District of George Town February 1828” This is an amazing piece of work that lists each child that falls into the above category, his/her age, fathers name and occupation, whether or not they are attending school, their character, ie good, bad, tolerable, if they are capable of reading and writing and for some reason whether they are Roman Catholics. Three children are shown to belong to Robert Graves, Richard, aged three and George and Georgiana as infants. Richard is shown as being of good character. Little Mary Barrett, aged seven, the daughter of Henry Barrett, is shown as “bad”. Henry was a gardener.

Richard disappears after this. A Richard Graves is shown as passing away at St Mary’s Hospital, Hobart, on the 30th December 1857 aged 35. This may or may not be him as his place of birth on the Death Certificate is shown as England but this information was supplied by a friend and not family so may be incorrect. The age certainly fits. His occupation is shown as “Seaman” which also fits with both his brothers.
