In 1881 William and his brothers, Frederick, Richard and Edward were living at 4, Jermyn St Place, Bradford, Yorkshire with their mother. His father was not at home when the census was taken and although the census shows that William's mother was married, she was probably a widow by this time. [4]

In 1891 they lived with Annie's parents at 42 Bondgate, Otley, Yorkshire. They had a 5 year old daughter, Edith Gray. [7]
