Page 464: "Died. At sea, on the 17th of April, Edward Gray, eldest son of Alva Gray, Esq. of Westport, Conn., in his 17th year. The cicumstances of this young man's death were of a most afficting nature. He left home on the 7th of April, and took his birth as a new hand, on board the packet ship Independence, bound for Liverpool. He left behind him, the most kind and affectionate parents, and a brother and sister, ... When he was seven days at sea he was washed overboard, and, not withstanding every effort was made to save him, he found a watery grave."
