Biography

James Gray was b. 1745 the son of Joshua & Jennat (Elliot) Gray; m. Elizabeth Howard, daughter of Edward Howard and Susannah Mitchell, circa 1762 (at probably, Castine); d. 1 Apr 1821 in what is now Brooksville, Hancock, Maine. He served in the Revolutionary War.

  • i. CHRISTOPHER MITCHELL; b. 1763 at Castine, Hancock, Maine; m. Margaret Howard, daughter of Benjamin H. Howard and Margaret Mitchell, 19 Dec 1787; married by Col. Gabriel Johonnot; m. Phebe Eaton, daughter of Eliakim Eaton and Mary Bunker, 31 May 1840; d. 29 Sep 1866 at Brooksville, Hancock, Maine; he was buried at Bell Family Cemetery, Brooksville, Hancock, Maine.
  • ii. SUSANNAH; b. circa 1765 at Hancock, Maine; m. Joseph Harris 6 Jan 1788 at Penobscot, Hancock, Maine; d. 1854; Æ 99.
  • iii. WILLIAM; b. 3 Jun 1772 at Sedgwick, Hancock, Maine; Marriage banns for he and Abigail Black, daughter of John Black and Abigail Watson, were published 21 Nov 1801 at Sedgwick, Hancock, Maine; d. circa 1822; He died after 1813, when he executed a real estate dead, and before June 12, 1822 when a commission was named to appraise the his estate.
  • iv. PHEBE; b. 7 May 1776 at Sedgwick, Hancock, Maine; Marriage banns for she and Shadrack Watson Black, son of John Black and Abigail Watson, were published 28 Dec 1800 at Sedgwick, Hancock, Maine; d. 12 Nov 1838 at Deer Isle, Hancock, Maine, at age 62; she and Shadrack Watson Black were buried at Babson Cemetery, Brooksville, Hancock, Maine.
