Biography

Ann was daughter of Joseph Gray and Mary LNU. Ann was the youngest of eleven children born to Joseph and Mary Gray, residents of Washington County, Virginia. [1]

She married Stephen Baxter in 1801. [1]

Stephen and Ann were the parents of eleven children: John, James, Joseph, William, Mary, Phoebe, Jesse, Sarah or Sallie, Ann, Stephen and Benjamin. [1]

She passed away in 1841. [1]

There is some controversy as to the gravesites of Stephen and Ann. The Clay County Cemetery records indicate that there is an “old cemetery in the old Baxter Springs community southeast of Holt.” It’s legal description shows it to be on property owned by Stephen. There are no engraven tombstones, but the cemetery is marked by a formation of rocks. This record indicates that Stephen and Ann may have been buried there, but their bodies were later moved to the Mount Memorial Cemetery in Liberty, Mo. The Clay County Archives research Department indicates that Stephen and Ann are buried on the family farm, and that it was his son, John, and his wife, Sarah, whose bodies were moved to Liberty. It seems logical that Stephen and Ann Baxter were buried in the cemetery on the corner of their farm as described by Jewell Mayes. [1]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Ann by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Ann:
