Jim Gray was an American computer scientist recognized for his contributions to database and transactional processing research.
While at Microsoft, Gray strived to put all the world’s scientific data online, along with tools to analyze the data.
His death is a mystery. On 28 Jan 2007, he disappeared on a solo sailboat trip out to Farallon Islands near San Francisco to scatter his mother's ashes. An extensive search was made but to no avail. He was declared legally dead on 28 Jan 2012.
Established in 2007, Microsoft Research created the "Jim Gray eScience Award" to recognize round-breaking, fundamental contributions to the field of eScience. Microsoft's WorldWide Telescope software is dedicated to Gray.
Microsoft also opened a research center in Madison, Wisconsin in 2008 named in his honor.
