Biography

In 1905 there was an S. H. Gray mentioned in relation to a crikcet match between BALMAIN V. GLEBE. where it was said he was "S. H. Gray, b Pontey 16"[1]

Samuel was a private in the 18 Infantry Battalion - 1 to 13 Reinforcements (May 1915 - June 1916), First World War, 1914-1918, Date of Embarkation 19 June 1915, Place of embarkation Sydney Ship Embarked On, HMAT Kanowna A61[2] Born 1891, Sydney, NSW, Australia. He embarked at Liverpool, New South Wales. Service number Army / Flying Corps. At the time he was a porter born in Burwood, NSW. When he joined up at the end of May 1915 he was age 23 years and 11 months. Next of kin Gertrude Alicia Dorothy Gray of 204 Marrickville Rd, Marrickville.[3]

In 1926 a daughter May Alicia Ethel was born, "GRAY.—On 16th January, to Mr. and Mrs. S. H. Gray, Govett avenue, Hawthorne—a daugh- ter (May Alicia Ethel). Dr. A. J. Reye and Nurse Briggs in attendance."[4]

In 1929 their seven year old daughter Iris Constance died "GRAY.—On 16th March, at Buranda Street, Buranda, Iris Constance, twin daughter of Mr. and Mrs. S. H. Gray, aged seven years"[5]

At the time of his daughter May's marriage in 1944 he and his wife were living at Clifton Street, Wilston[6]

In 1945 his eldest daughter became engaged to be married "RYAN— GRAY.— The Engagement la announced of Joan Emily (ex Australian Women' Land Army), the elder Daughter of Mr and Mrs. S. H. Gray, of Clifton Street. Wilston. to Patrick John (R.A.A.F. returned). N.G., eldest Son of Mr. A Mrs. J. V. Ryan, of Bancroft, Qld."[7]

His wife died in 1954 "GRAY, Gertrude Alicia Dorothy. — Fourteenth May, 1954, beloved Wife of Samuel Harford Gray, of Wilston, and loving Mother of Joan Emily Pinches (Lawnton), and May Alicia Ethel Dengate (Southport)."[8]

Later in October 1954 he went to the funeral of relative "Mr Thomas Alfred Llewellyn Gray), of 56 Clifton St., Wilston, formerly 31st Batt., 1st. A.I.F." who was either a brother, brother-in-law or uncle[9]
