Death

Cuthbert was survived by his wife. Some assume that she died on a Monday during the summer of 1636 when, "pestilence ... swept over Newcastle and Northern England," but others think she may have been alive in November 1664,[4] due to an entry for an Eliz. Grey in the "Journals for the House of Commons." It associates her with the coal industry but does not put the record in context with a geographical location.[16]

While Cuthbert's wife did inherit "leases of lands, tenements, and coal mines, ... in Newbiggine, Heigham Dicks, Bellasses, Newham, Whitbie Moor, and East Denton," debate continues in light of a record from St. Nicholas which states that widow Elizabeth Gray died on 22 August 1636.[3] She was buried next to her husband at St. Nicholas.[3]

Notes

EVENTS

  • 1622: coal loaded by division.[17]

TO DO:

  • cross-check in laws.
  • add narrative re: problems abt. "of Backworth" (Cuthbert had no assets there ... but pedigrees have asserted it. It's also seen in Christ's College (Camb.) entry for Rbt. Ellison (b. 27 Apr 1648 Newcastle), son of Rbt. Ellison, MP & Eliz. Gray.
Note ... will of James Grey (Gray) of Newcastle, draper, implies that Cuthbert might be his cousin. James' son Ralph is the ancestor of Gray of Backworth.[18]

Notes...

  1. Welford, 1885, p. 67.[1] of Newcastle-upon-Tyne [and Backworth], Cuthbert's will makes no mention of property or interest in Backworth, but Ellison pedigrees by Surtees and Hodgson attribute it to him, (Welford, 1885, p. 74).[2].
