Biography

MY BRICK WALL no longer! I now have information back to the Gray Immigrant Ancestors. Initially all I had was the single substantiated record for John Archibald Gray as it appears in the Chester Township Books when his marriage to Ann Ellis is recorded. The entry shows them as having been married in St. Stephens' Anglican Church 17 November 1851. [1]

From the Gray Genealogy, John Archibald Gray was born 1 September, 1829 in New Ross, Lunenburg, Nova Scotia to John Gray Jr. and his wife Eliza Julia Gillman. [2] He had one sibling listed, David Gillman Gray, born 2 January 1832 in New Ross.

Archibald preferred to be called Archibald, [3] or Archie for everyday use. [4]

The Gray Genealogy records only John Archibald Gray Jr. as offspring for Archibald and Ann. Allen David Gray is shown as their child in several biographical articles on his early life in publications in Topeka, Kansas. In those articles Allen also mentions another surviving sibling, his brother, Leander Gray, in comments he made on his life to an interviewer in Topeka, Kansas.

Archie died in 1861. He nearly did several years earlier. A man named Joseph and Archibald Gray fell into the river. Joseph died and Archibald's life was barely saved by an Indian. Ann Ellis had a brother, Joseph, who died in Gold River 27 April 1855. [5] My thanks to Walter Ellis for the article. [6]

In 1853 Archibald was living in New Ross, Lunenburg, Nova Scotia. [7]

He was a cooper. [8]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Archibald by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Archibald:
