Dr. Edward Whitworth, 74, of Red Oak, died Sunday, Sept. 9, 2012, at his son's home in Ada. The family will greet visitors today from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Jones Harkins Funeral Home in Wilburton. Funeral services are Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Life Impact Center of the First Baptist Church of Red Oak. Burial will follow at the Red Oak Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Jones Harkins Funeral Home of Wilburton. He was born Aug. 5, 1938, to Maude (Forbus) Whitworth in Red Oak. He graduated from Red Oak High School with the class of 1956. He married Phyllis Uzzel on Nov. 23, 1960, in Tulsa. He attended Southeastern University and received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education. He then received a Master's Degree from Northeastern State University and a Specialist in Education Degree from Southern Illinois University. He received his Doctorate from Oklahoma State University in 1974. He began teaching science in 1961 at Broken Arrow Public Schools. In 1968, he moved his family to Illinois to attend Southern Illinois University. He returned to Red Oak in 1973 and worked as the Superintendent of Red Oak Public Schools until 1975. He then returned his family to Broken Arrow and served as the Assistant Superintendent until his retirement in 1993. During retirement, he was an active member of the Red Oak Church of Christ where he was a teacher and leader of the Church. He was also an active member of the community, serving at the Red Oak Masonic Lodge No. 66 AF & AM as a Master Mason and currently served as Chaplain; he was on the Red Oak Cemetery Committee, he volunteered with the Red Oak Volunteer Fire Department and was a charter member of the Latimer County Arts Council. He is survived by his wife, Phyllis, of the home; a son, Dr. Barry Whitworth and wife, Felicia, of Ada; and grandchildren, Lauren Elizabeth Whitworth, Madison Deann Whitworth and Walker Dean Whitworth. Also, a sister, Alice Adams and husband, Jerry, of Red Oak; sisters-in-law, Peggy Kirkes, of Red Oak, Evelyn Clark, of Moore, and Gail Whitworth, of Inola; special nieces, Leslie Robertson and husband, Joe Frank, of Red Oak, Kelly Johnson and husband, Tony, of Buffalo Valley, Willa Dean Whitworth, of Vinita, Debbie Capella and husband, George, of Bakersfield, Calif., Robin Weaver and husband, Shane, of Hectorville, and Becky Fields and husband, Wayne, of Catoosa; and special nephews, Mike Kirkes and wife, Katha, of Houston, Dane Clark, of Moore, Blane Brown and wife, Lucia, of Red Oak, Stephen Brown and wife, Nancy, of Duncan, Roy Ewing Whitworth and wife, Susan, of Bartlesville. And, a special great-niece, Krissy Jo Martin and husband, Joe, of Red Oak; special great-nephews, Chase Martin, of Talihina, Brad Kirkes, of Talihina, and Waylon Kirkes and wife, Robin, and their son, Payton, of Talihina. He was preceded in death by his mother, Maud Whitworth; a sister, Dorothy Luiz; a brother, Roy Whitworth; and, brothers-in-law, M.C. Kirkes and Charles Clark. Pallbearers will be his nephews, Blane Brown, Stephen Brown, Roy Ewing Whitworth, Dane Clark, Joe Martin and Joe Frank Robertson. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. C.G. Oliver Jr., Dr. Don Hall, Dr. Darrell Gwartney, Joe Paul Hackworth, Larry Mabry, Charles Martin Collins, Tom Donathan and the R.O.H.S. Class of 1956.
