Isabella Gray was born around 1829 in Stamford, a town in Lincolnshire close to the border with Rutlandshire and Northamptonshire[1]. She was the daughter of John Gray, a Drum Major in the South Lincs Militia and his wife Charlotte [1][2] and was living in New Sleaford when she met and married Benjamin Gash at Sleaford on 6 November 1849. Their witnesses were David Gash and William Payne[2]
The couple lived in Dunston, Metheringham and Scopwick, all villages within two or three miles of each other, and they had ten known children:
The 1861 Census shows the family in Scopwick lodging with an elderly Elizabeth Gash, who was possibly Benjamin's mother[13]. By 1881 Isabella was a widow living with three of her sons, George, David and Samuel[14]
In 1899 Isabella, "an infirm lady of 73 years" quarrelled with and assaulted William Pacey, a neighbour in Scopwick, and appeared at Sleaford Petty Sessions. The summons was dismissed as "six of one and half a dozen of the other" and Isabella was awarded 3s and 6d for her expenses to be paid by Pacey "Which seemed to please her highly" :-) [19]
Isabella passed away on 14 January 1917 in Scopwick and was buried on 18 January[20][21]
