Lexie Estelle Gray DuBose (nickname Jimmie) was born October 13, 1912, in Fayette County, and passed away on Friday, September 7, 2007 in Gonzales at the age of 94. She was preceded in death by her parents, James A. and Mary Estelle Gray, her husband, James Hartford DuBose, grandson James Elton DuBose, three brothers and a sister.
During her lifetime Lexie faithfully served her family, community and God. She and her husband were married in 1931 and raised two sons, James Louis (Jimmy) DuBose and Preston Wayne DuBose. She and her husband worked together in providing for their family. Lexie and Hartford owned and operated a grocery and filling station in Waelder during the "forties". Later they moved to their residence, of more than 60 years, in Thompsonville, where together they farmed and ranched.
Lexie is given credit by her sons for help and support in establishing successful businesses. She helped James Louis establish his air conditioning business in Gonzales and subsequently helped Preston Wayne establish a dairy. She loved her sons and their families and never failed to come to their aid. Lexie's joy was in bringing together her family. She loved to see and spend time with her five grandchildren and then later her 10 great-grandchildren. She always was ready for a good game of dominos or cards with anyone who was willing to lose to her. Her house was always open and welcoming to any family member or friend who wanted to stop by for a visit.
Lexie was a bright beacon in the community, known for her generosity and warmth in welcoming newcomers to the neighborhood. She spent more than 50 years serving in numerous civic and church related organizations in her local community. She also was recognized for her many years of service as a reporter for the Thompsonville Community news.
She is survived by two sons, James L. (Jimmy) DuBose and wife Darlene of Gonzales, Preston Wayne DuBose and wife Barbara of Thompsonville; four grandchildren, Denise Colburn, Donna Marie Wurst, Preston Paul DuBose, Christine DuBose Presley; 10 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
She will be honored and remembered by her two sons and their families and her extended relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held Monday, September 10, 2007 at Seydler-Hill Funeral Home in Gonzales at 10 a.m. Burial followed at the Thompsonville Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Donnie Grauke, Paul DuBose, Trey Presley, Bruce DuBose, Donald DuBose and Melvin Grauke.
Memorials may be made to the Thompsonville Community Center, Delhi Baptist Church or to the Thompsonville Cemetery Association.
