Biography

Listed as taxpayer Randolph Co. 1779, NC Taxpayers 1779-1790, vol. 1

Bought land on Oct. 17, 1787, from Robert Gray and his wife Jane, 252 acres on the ridge between Carraway and Deep River, land which had been sold to Robert Gray by William Millikan.

His will was written 29 Oct 1792, recorded Dec term 1792, Asheboro NC; leaves 1/3 of estate to wife Jannet, other two thirds equally divided between six children, Samuel, Jean, William, Robert, John and Edward; Jannet together with his brothers Will and Robert are executors.

Mary Lou House says that "according to data furnished by the Gray family, the children of John and Jannet Gray were mentioned according to age in the will of their father."

page 13 in The Gray Family and Allied Lines, by Jo White Linn: "John Gray served as a Captain in the 3rd North Carolina Regiment, enlisting 16 April and retiring 1 June 1778. He is listed in Heitman's REGISTER, the DAR ROSTER, and COLONIAL RECORDS OF NORTH CAROLINA. [footnote 42] This lineage has been accepted by the National Society, Daughters of the American Revolution."

However, this is probably NOT the John Gray of Randolph County, but a different John Gray who lived in or near Halifax County NC.

The 3d Regiment was created the day after the Congress (of North Carolina) created the Halifax regiment of minutemen and all the same names appear on the respective rosters. The enlistment and "retirement" dates quoted by Linn are the date the regiment was created and the date it "was reduced to a cadre and sent home to recruit up to strength," according to Wikipedia.
