Biography

Ella was born in 1871. She passed away in 1941. She married Daniel Lincoln Phillips on Jan. 3, 1893 in Mitchell Cnty at the ranch home of her parents which was about 30 mi. south of Colorado City. They then moved to Bowling Green Ohio to the hometown of Daniel's parents. His father had bought them a ranch. However, after the birth of their 1st child, Harvey, they returned to Texas. Juliette Phillips (Schwarzbeck) relayed to Robt.L. Phillips Jr. that from her recollection of what her mother had told her, the older children were in "on the ranch". Juliette said she sensed the Grays disapproved of the marriage and believes Ella did not go to Colorado City to have her babies.

Mattie Brownie was born on the Z-L Ranch in Crosby Cnty on 11-9-1897. Juliette Phillips (Schwarzbeck) related the following anecdote to Robert L. Phillips Jr. regarding a conversation she had with her mother Ella: "It was on one of the trail drives that Mother was alone & gave birth to Browney only with the help of Harvey, who I believe she said was five. Upon return of my father she requested him to get a shovel in the event there was a death when again she was alone, she could dig a grave".

Ella Boone Gray Phillips was a remarkably strong woman. She endured the life of a cowboy's wife, turned farmer. Gave birth to 13 children, lost her husband in 1917 and in Feb. 1920 she watched 3 of her daughters die in one day and her son, Forrest, die the next day; all from the 1918 Flu Pandemic.
