According to Hitchin-Kempe, a Kempe genealogist, Robert Kempe's second wife was Elizabeth, daughter of Edmund Grey of Merton, who's sister Margaret had already married Edward Kempe, brother to Robert.[1] This appears to be the standard version of the pedigree found in visitation pedigrees etc. which would have been made by close relatives only a few generations away.[2]
The Norfolk antiquarian Blomefield disagrees with Hitchin-Kemp.[3] So did Crabbe (1877). [4] And so did Edward Cave.[5] According to the second set of authors, Elizabeth's father was Thomas de Grey, son of Edmund. It was only Mary, the wife of Robert Kemp's brother, who was a daughter of Edmund de Grey.
In one version Elizabeth and Mary and both sisters (by blood) and sisters-in-law. In the other version they are aunt and niece (by blood), and sisters-in-law.
The relatively detailed wills of Thomas, Edmund, and Edmund's father Thomas, seem indeed to leave no room for a daughter of Edmund named Elizabeth.
