Research notes

According to Hitchin-Kempe, a Kempe genealogist, Robert Kempe's second wife was Elizabeth, daughter of Edmund Grey of Merton, who's sister Margaret had already married Edward Kempe, brother to Robert.[1] This appears to be the standard version of the pedigree found in visitation pedigrees etc. which would have been made by close relatives only a few generations away.[2]

The Norfolk antiquarian Blomefield disagrees with Hitchin-Kemp.[3] So did Crabbe (1877). [4] And so did Edward Cave.[5] According to the second set of authors, Elizabeth's father was Thomas de Grey, son of Edmund. It was only Mary, the wife of Robert Kemp's brother, who was a daughter of Edmund de Grey.

In one version Elizabeth and Mary and both sisters (by blood) and sisters-in-law. In the other version they are aunt and niece (by blood), and sisters-in-law.

The relatively detailed wills of Thomas, Edmund, and Edmund's father Thomas, seem indeed to leave no room for a daughter of Edmund named Elizabeth.

Muskett in Suffolk Manorial Families has a detailed Kempe section, and he cites a 1612 pedigree made presumably only a few generations later by the family (for the 1612 visitation), which says Edmund was the father (agrees with Hitchin Kemp).

Agrees with Crabbe but maybe derived from same source? https://books.google.be/books?id=Z_hfAAAAcAAJ&pg=PA115

Note: as explained in text Crabbe gives a different father than other sources. But he is maybe the best source for the Greys. Will try to find confirming documentation.

Grey would be a better LNAB. Gray seems rarely used for this family. (Only the profile manager can change it.)
