Biography

Arthur Gray was married in Hunterdon County, New Jersey on 3 April 1778 to Mary Reading, a daughter of Daniel Reading and Euphemia Reid.[1] He moved to the Chenango area of Tioga County (now Broome County), New York, about 1802. He died in Chenango on 24 Nov. 1809.[2] His will was written in Chenango on 14 June 1809 and proved in Broome Co. on 27 Dec. 1809. The will named his wife Mary; daughters Hannah Hankerson, Euphemia Dean, Anastasia Ogden, Mary Page and Catherine Gray; and sons William, Daniel, Arthur, Isaac and Barzallai.[3]

Research Notes

There is disagreement about his birth date and who his parents were. Cutter said he was the son of David Gray of Elizabethtown, New Jersey, born about 1755.[5] Others say he was born in 1746, son of Jacob Gray of Amwell, Hunterdon Co., New Jersey, who named a son "Aurt" in his will dated 1756. Still others say this Arthur's father was Abraham Gray of Kingwood Twp, Hunterdon Co., New Jersey, who named a son Art in his will dated 1772. Jacob and Abraham may have been brothers, sons of Isaac Gray, both baptized 14 Aug 1700.

Gray-5215 and Gray-2162 appear to represent the same person because: They have the same death date and location. I don't believe there is any evidence of who is parents were and when he was born. Three different men are proposed as his father, and some sources show the son of Jacob Gray to be a different Arthur Gray.
