Biography
Ellen may have been born about 1802-1806. [1] Her father was Nathaniel Greacen, a stationer of The Diamond, Monaghan town. [2] This may have been Nathaniel Greacen, a well-known printer; not confirmed.
She attended school in Monaghan with Charles Gavan Duffy KCMG PC (1816-1903) and his sisters; and remember the foundation-stone being laid of the old Monaghan First Presbyterian Church. [2]
She passed away 22 March 1911 age 109 at the residence of her son-in-law Mr W. Graham, Killyvane, Monaghan; due to influenza. She had been a widow for over 35 years. Informed by Elizabeth Graham, daughter, Killyvane. [2] [3]
She was interred in the family burying-ground at Derryvalley Reformed Presbyterian Church, Ballybay. The chief mourners were: [2]
- Isaac Graham, William Graham, Richard Graham (grandsons)
- William Swan of the Northern Standard office (nephew)
- Matt. Haw (nephew)
- W. Graham, William Haw (sons-in-law)
- William H. Swan (relative)
The headstone also records a death N. Moore of Baillieborough (d.1872); and Hannah Hawe d. Oct 1926 age 82. [4] [5] [6]
Research Notes
Age 109 sounds a bit far-fetched!
- The cited schoolmate Duffy was born in 1816.
- The old Monaghan Presbyterian church burned down in 1813 and was rebuilt from the old stone walls.
- She is 95 in the 1901 census.
- Her daughter Elizabeth was born in 1853 -- if her age in censuses is correct!
These points suggest that perhaps she was more like 104 than 109.
The name "Matt. Haw" in the obituary might be a transcription error referring to Nathaniel Hawe (1882-1966), who signed as "Nat Hawe" when registering his parents' deaths.
