Biography

Birth

James Nathan Greek Jr. was born c. 1835 in Chenango, Broome, New York, United States to James Nathan Greek (c.1799- ) and Rosella Unknown (c. 1799- ).

Marriages and Family

He married twice.

(1 Melvina Betsey Handy 1841-1934. on 25 Oct 1856 in Chenango, NY. They must have divorced because she married twice more, the first time in 1877.
(2 Janette Ann Sherwood, Nettie, 1847-1928 before 1867. They have at least 8 children.

Military Service

He joined the military in 1861 for the American Civil War. He enlisted in Batavia, Genesee, New York. He was separated on 11 August 1863 for a transfer and mustered out of service on 8 June 1865. His unit was the 179th Infantry, Co. B.

His pension was contested by wife, Minnie Palmer, B.C. on 28 June 1930. She would be Melvina Betsy Handy. She was also married to Edward E. Carey born in Tioga, Pennsylvania and to Charles W. Palmer. Her death certificate gives names of husbands. The 2 women shared the pension of $8. a month.

He was in the National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers in Bath, Steuben, New York on 3 April 1883. Discharged 12 June 1884. They don't say what was wrong with him at the time, but he was disabled by a gunshot wound during the war.

Death and Burial

James died on 27 September 1908 in Canisteo, Steuben New York at the age of 72. He was buried in the Hillside Cemetery, Canisteo, Steuben, New York. Find A Grave: Memorial #108107201
