Introduction

This profile has been re-configured to emphasize proven facts and relegate unproven traditional family history to the research section, which shows examples of the gradual and subtle, or at times sudden and dramatic, development of a personal and historic identity over the passing of generations of descendants. The collaboration of direct descendants of an individual, especially as far back as the 18th century, often introduces variations and details not possible from a single researcher. Add to that the collaboration of the descendants of the individual's siblings and other relatives, then the variations of possibility expand. Keeping an open mind is necessary, as well as preserving as many variations as possible. Analysis and reasoning then help to narrow the range to the most likely and probable details.
Robert M. Green wrote "A Branch From the Green Tree" in 1978[1] and preserved a version of Joseph from his community of contributors. His picture of Joseph showed that he was the oldest son of William Green and Dinah Unknown of Berkeley county, Virginia, and who died before 1776, the date of his father, William's, Will filed in Berkeley county, Virginia. Robert compiled a list of corrections and donated his materials to the Licking County Genealogical Society after publishing. In 2004 a mother-daughter team collected fresh research and wrote "Frank L.M. Wolford & Laura May Green, Their Ancestors & Descendants"[2] with a few more details on Joseph, but still the oldest son. The relevant passage has been copied below. In the last fifteen years the accepted version has shifted away form Joseph being the son of Dinah because records have been found for her origins in Maryland. More recent developments have Joseph being a son of William Green born before his father's marriage to Dinah Butt, which moves his birth year estimate before 1723, instead of after, and his mother is unknown. Both of the books of Green family history mentioned here were from the perspective of William and Dinah's now accepted oldest son, Regnal and his descendants.
The line of his brother, or half-brother, Regnal begins with the 1776 Will of William Green in Berkeley, Virginia. Meanwhile, the line of Joseph begins with his 1771 Will from Tryon county, North Carolina and his descendants have their own version of Joseph with no known parents. Have they rejected the Regnal line's version? There are many blanks to fill and questions to answer in order to bridge the gap between Berkeley and Tryon counties. Every descendant has a sense of belonging and ownership for their particular version of family history, especially if they inherited it from a parent or grandparent or other relative. It is intuitive and normal to be skeptical of any other version, so it is unusual to be willing to collaborate with others who have different versions of family history. WikiTree embraces and promotes collaboration, so it is up to each contributor to overcome their natural sense of ownership. It is the decision of this profile manager to maintain the traditional Green family history in the research section, but purge the vitals and biography of the unproven details.

Biography

Joseph Green was probably born about 1726 in Prince George's County, Maryland and his father was William Green and his mother was Dinah Butt, who were married in Prince George's County, Maryland in 1723. It is not known when the family of William and Dinah Green moved across the Potomac River to Berkeley county, Virginia, but it was at least as early as 1751. Joseph may have gained his majority before or after this relocation and nothing is known about him, from the perspective of his father's family, besides this point of origin gained from mention in his father, William Green's, 1776-1780 Will recorded in Berkeley county, Virginia. Most likely, Joseph died before his father wrote his will in 1776 because Joseph's son William (Old William's grandson) was named as an heir instead of Joseph.[3][4] At one time, family history accepted that Joseph died on 1 September 1771 in North Carolina, either in Tryon or Cleveland counties. This death and burial connection is speculative family tradition without proof and is therefore moved to the research section below.

Family of William Green of Berkeley, Virginia
Generation No. 1
1. WILLIAM1 GREEN was born Abt. 1695 in prob. Maryland, and died Abt. 1779 in Berkeley Co., Virginia1. He married DINAH BUTT Abt. 1723 in Probably Prince Georges Co., Maryland, daughter of RICHARD BUTT and MARY UNKNOWN. She was born 05 Feb 1708 in Queen Anne's Parish, Prince Georges Co., Maryland2,3, and died Abt. 1802 in Berkeley Co., Virginia4.
Children of WILLIAM GREEN and DINAH BUTT are:
i. REGNAL2 GREEN, b. Bet. 1724 - 1735, prob. Maryland5; d. Abt. 1834, Fairfield Co., Ohio.
ii. JOSEPH GREEN, b. Abt. 1726, Maryland; d. Bef. 1776.
Notes for JOSEPH GREEN:
The wife of Joseph Green was probably the Mary Green found in early Berkeley county tax lists. She had a John Butt living with her in the first tax list in 1785, so she may have been the widow of a Butt when she married Joseph. There is a William Green from Ohio co. (now Brooke Co.) WV who died in 1798 and was buried on Hunter's Run in Fairfield Co., Ohio. William was with the Green party, headed by John & Ruhama Green when he died. William left an estate file in Brooke WV. This is a likely candidate for the son of Joseph Green.
iii. SARAH GREEN, b. Abt. 1730, prob. Maryland; d. Aft. 1800; m. RICHARD BUTT, Bef. 1765; b. Abt. 1730; d. Abt. 1799, Berkeley Co., Virginia.
iv. MARY GREEN, b. Abt. 1732, prob. Maryland; d. Bef. 1800.
v. WILLIAM GREEN, b. Abt. 1735, prob. Maryland; d. 27 Feb 1793, Berkeley Co., Virginia; m. (1) ANN BUTT8, Abt. 1758, Frederick Co., Virginia; b. Abt. 1740; d. Aft. 1783, Berkeley Co., Virginia; m. (2) MARY UNKNOWN, Abt. 1786, Berekley Co., Virginia.
vi. ELIZABETH GREEN, b. Abt. 1740, prob. Maryland; d. Bef. 1800.
vii. DINAH GREEN, b. Abt. 1745, prob. Virginia; d. Aft. 1800; m. JOSEPH DEAN.
viii. KEZIAH GREEN, b. Abt. 1753, Virginia; d. Aft. 1821; m. DANIEL DEVAULT, 03 May 1785, Berkeley Co., Virginia; b. Abt. 1750; d. Abt. 1821, Wayne Co., Ohio.

Research

We conducted a new project of research on Joseph Green over 2020-2021. This profile was built with a perspective from his father, William, and his brother, Regnal. The primary source was his father, William Green's, 1776-1780 Will of Berkeley, Virginia. This has yielded a very limited amount of direct and indirect information.

The actual direct descendants of Joseph Green of Tryon county, North Carolina, have put together much more information, beginning with his 1771 Will. The Will documents Joseph's widow and children, which the William/Regnal version does not have. That version does not accept a known father for Joseph.
The main purpose of this project will be to adequately and fairly determine, if possible, these two perspectives which do not apparently overlap as far as proof is concerned, but have an unproven family history tradition which only has thin circumstantial evidence and speculation.

The initial internet search returns 595 results for "Captain Joseph Green" Maryland 1715. The top four are FamilySearch, WikiTree, Ancestry (not relevant) and MyHeritage (not relevant). Changing search without "Captain" added geni.com and geneanet.org. Changing search to death 1771 in Tryon, NC yielded all of the above plus rootsweb.com and larrygen.com. It is surprising how numerous the trees are which connect this Joseph Green to Rhode Island. We must not discount this well-accepted origin and investigate the basis of it as opposed to the Maryland origin. The seven profiles collected today seems to be a good cross section. The 1771 Will transcription is invaluable. The next phase will be to evaluate and sort proven and unproven data, with followup on source leads.

Death • 1 Sources 1 September 1771 Age 56 North Carolina, British Colonial America
Profile includes father, William Green (1695-1779), mother, First Unknown Wife (1695-1715), wife, Mary Sarah McEntire (1735-1817) and nine children. Only source appears to be a burial memorial with birth and death dates. A note in the 2004 book by Russell & Kerns mentions a candidate for the widow of Joseph, named Mary Green, living in Berkeley county, Virginia, in 1785. If this is a reasonable possibility, then Joseph Green, son of William, may have died in Virginia, not in North Carolina. The two WikiTree profiles above had references to the same Find-a-Grave burial memorial and were slated for a merge. The managers of the second profile (Green-8439) objected to the merge, changed the merge to an un-merged match, deleted the burial source and are in the process of re-configuring their profile and sources to make it a non-duplicate and reinforcing it from interference (collaboration). (Note left by Steve Lake at 10:15pm MST 06 Feb 2021). A review of the Green-8439 profile shows a birth year estimate of 1715, unknown place, but in the North American British Colonies. It also has an unnamed father in order to connect a sister, Ann. His proven military service was in 1744, but does not list a location. The military account does include other men on the list of Captain Samuel Corbin's Company from North Carolina, with links to their profiles on WikiTree. This looks like a case of FAN, or cluster, genealogy, which strengthens all of their profiles by association. The earliest land record for Joseph Green is 1758, with five more in the 1760's. These facts bear on the obvious question of origin and cannot ignore the possibility of a match with some other profile with an origin, but missing later life details after 1744/1758. Collaboration would be an uncomfortable process, but there is little harm in acknowledging the possibilities. (Additional note left by Steve Lake 18 Feb 2021).

This profile has a birth and two census records, which may lend higher credibility to the other un-sourced data. It appears that some hybrid versions conflate the origins of this profile with the Tryon NC profile, in spite of a different birth date. This may be a truer version of the Rhode Island Joseph Green(e). It may be possible that FamilySearch or Ancestry have similar profiles with more sources and it would be worthwhile to search for them. (Note updated by Steve Lake 18 Feb 2021)

The interesting elements are the birth range and the two alternate birth places. I have never seen a source reference on GENi, but that just be that membership is required to see full information.

  • Joseph Green on "larrygen.com Treasures from the Past"

Name Joseph GREEN Born 18 Feb 1726 Rhode Island Gender Male
Cemetery Bostic Brickyard Cemetery, Bostic, Rutherford County, NC
Military Service French and Indian War (Captain)
Died 29 Sep 1771 Buffalo Creek, Tryon Co., NC
Notes: From LeLa Whistnant's website: Joseph was among the earliest residents west of the Catawba. There are many records of him in the area in the 1750s and early 1760s. He was at least in the Charlotte, Mecklenburg County area by 1751 or 1752 to meet and marry Mary. Strong tradition says his son William was born in 1753 at their home on Buffalo Creek near the present NC-SC line in Cleveland County. There is evidence of a settlement there on Buffalo Creek north of the Broad River in 1754 when 26 people were killed in an Indian raid. Whether he originally settled on Buffalo Creek and moved north because of Indian problems is unclear. Most evidence puts Joseph further north in the German settlement near Beaverdam Creek in the early fifties. He was on the Capt. Samuel Corbin's militia list, now thought to be from 1753. When Burill Grigg died in 1756, Joseph had an account at his trading post on the south side of the Catawba at Rocky Ford as did his friend James McAfee. In 1758 he patented about 500 acres of land between Beaverdam Creek and Indian Creek in the northern portion of present day Gaston County. If Joseph were like most settlers, he had lived and worked that land for several years before actually receiving the grant. In the 1760's he sold this land to Christy and Peter Eaker, Jr. and settled or resettled permanently in the Buffalo Creek area. The log home Mary and her second husband, James McAfee, shared on Buffalo Creek may also may have been Joseph's before his death. Still standing in the 1980s, it was typical of many prosperous settlers in the area. Unlike the modern image of a one room cabin, it was two stories tall and contained four rooms with a hallway in the middle. 1st land grant dated 1753. Listed as married man in Samuel Cobrin's militia company in 1747 (1st militia company west of the Catawba River). Joseph was a member of Cobrin's militia, was listed as a Captain during the French and Indian War, and during January, 1770 term of court (Tryon County), Joseph wa s appointed Captain of the Militia. Also listed as "Ranger" during French and Indian War. At one time lived near Crouse, NC in Gaston County. Jan 1770 term of court - Joseph Green appointed Captain of Militia for Tryon County (records in office of Secretary of State of North Carolina). McEntire's book says he was born in 1714 in Maryland. Possibly born in Tryon Co., NC. Buried in Green family cemetery near the brick yards at Bostic, NC. Father may have been Thomas, but there is no documented evidence.

CONCLUSION

In spite of all these various versions of Joseph Green, the manager of this profile agrees with the author, Loraine Kerns, who believes that this

Joseph Green,
born about 1726 (or after 1723),
was a son of William Green and Dinah Butt,
lived in Maryland and Virginia,
had a wife named Mary who may have been connected to the Butt family,
had a son named William who died in Ohio in 1798,
and died in Virginia before 1776 (the date of his father's Will).

This profile will be edited to conform to the limits of the information found in "Frank L.M. Wolford & Laura May Green, Their Ancestors & Descendants" Compiled by Loraine Russell Kerns & Alma Wolford Russell, 2004. The research section will be gradually condensed, but will continue to show the various versions so that others may make their own decisions for what to include in their personal and private trees.
There are a multitude of variations and combinations of information and relationships for similar profiles, which may make this profile a target for merges, unless careful study is made of the similarities and differences between possible profiles.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Joseph by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Joseph:

Green-27716 and Green-11259 do not represent the same person because: Different information
These two profiles are probably duplicates, depending on which identity is being attempted to dominate. The basic differences are point of origin. One is Rhode Island, one is Maryland and one is unknown. Those in favor of "unknown" addamently refuse to engage in negotiations to compromise with either of the other two. Their stance is probably the most justified due to a lack of hard evidence. The other two probably don't have anything more than traditional family history for support. The referenced profile on FamilySearch.org (LDQB-R5R) is probably conflated (multiple combined identities), any and all of which are debatable. Interested collaborators need to engage in a conversation about which origin to focus on and how to address the other two.

Green-27716 and Green-11259 appear to represent the same person because: Clearly ment to be the same profiles. Land grants, deed and court records will also show Green-11259 and Green-8439 are different profiles. This is using:

This person died in Berkeley county Va. Why has he morphed into Joseph Green died Tryon County North Carolina. Why have the dates and places been changed on Joseph Green to look like a son of Mary Increase Allen. Why has Joseph Green's original data changed to this profile.

No, this person did not die in Berkeley county, VA. His father, William, mentioned this Joseph, as the father of a grandson named William, in his Will of 1776, recorded in Berkeley county, VA. This person's step-mother, Dinah, died in Berkeley county, VA in 1802, as did about four of his half-siblings.

This profile was created in 2014 and I joined WikiTree in 2017, taking over this orphaned profile as profile manager shortly after that. I do not remember what details were in the vitals, nor what relationships existed at that time without going deep into the change history. Did you look at change history and is that where your questions are coming from? It is possible those changes were made by the previous manager. I suspect the most reasonable answer could be that changes by me were made to comply with the sources supplied by me. These sources do not mention a Rhode Island connection. These sources do support a connection to the Greens of Berkeley county, Virginia.

Early last year the "Suggestions," or errors list, showed that this profile and the profile of Joseph Green both reference the same Find-a-Grave burial memorial. Have you seen that report? A merge seemed like the obvious solution, so I made changes to show that the details of origin were in disagreement and needed to be remove from the data fields and placed in the biography as alternate possibilities. I know that the Rhode Island origin is commonly accepted, but I do not know what evidence it may be based on. I did not understand the Berkeley, VA connection, but knew it was also commonly accepted, base on William Green's 1776 Will of Berkeley. That was before I was given a layman's explanation and a link to the DNA evidence. I believe the merged profile needs to have a birth year estimate, with a range of years in the bio, and birth place "Unknown" with the three possible places in the bio; Unknown, Rhode Island and Maryland. Maryland is based on his possible father, William Green (1695-1779) of Berkeley, VA, marrying Dinah Butt, who was born in Maryland - we don't know when William & Dinah arrived in Berkeley county or its predecessor, Frederick, but probably before 1751). Some of the volume of the information relating to Joseph's connection to Berkeley county can be moved to the free space page of supplementary information on William Green before the merge, so it won't overwhelm the other two alternates. Can we work in this direction?

I am not sure why Southern Pioneers did not reply to communication regarding this profile, however the profile does not fall within the scope of the Southern Pioneers Project which deals with Post-1776 profiles.(This person was still residing in the British colonies prior to 1776, and up to the time of his death). It appears that the profile at question Greem-8439 falls within the scope of the Southern Colonies Project which deals with Pre-1776 colonial period profiles. The question of which project should manage the Green-8439 profile will be resolved shortly.

The proposed merge is currently postponed because there is some question as to whether these two profiles, Greem-8439 and Greem-11259 represent the same person. This question should be resolved prior to continuing the proposed merge.

Green-8439 and Green-11259 are not ready to be merged because: These profiles need more research to determine whether they are the same person. Their claimed origins are in two different locations. Do not merge these profiles unless it can be proven that they are the same person.

Contact was made by me with Southern Pioneers Project in February and again in March. They have not responded.

The profiles are duplicates and a merge would solve the burial link overlap, but there is a larger problem. Since the two profiles were created by two different lines of descendants there are two different theories regarding Joseph's origins. There are actually three opinions. This profile connects Joseph of NC to William Green of MD & VA. The duplicate asserts their Joseph has no known origins. The third one is a connection to Rhode Island. The research section I have added attempts to present and preserve and maintain the two old theories in preparation of a merge. A merged profile would probably keep the data from Green-8439 and the two traditional theories described in the biography. Connecting parents would depend on mediation. I would guess that two of these theories date back many, many years, and they are held dear with no room for compromise. The Southern Pioneers has apparently rejected both of them and claim unknown until they can establish a new proven origin. This impasse will probably require mediation. The difference now is DNA, which links William Green of MD & VA with one of Joseph's grandsons, according to my expert. That will need to be evaluated and, if legitimate, used in the mediation process. Burial references have been removed and death date changed. Who can help with mediation?

Thank you for responding. I will do some research and discuss this with the other Project members. I will send you a message when I know more.

You may want to collaborate with the Southern Pioneers Project. This may be a duplicate profile to one that is managed by them. Green-8439. That profile is https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Green-8439. Can you please remove the two find-a-grave links you have on this profile until you are sure they are not duplicates. If they are duplicates they will need to be merged. That find-a-grave is connected to Green-8439 and has the matching data, death date, and wife, etc. It is creating DataDoctor suggestions because the same f-a-g is connected to two different people. You also have a different date of death than the f-a-g.

Thirty days have passed since my inquiry regarding apparent duplicate profile which also references the burial memorial of Joseph Green. Today a research section was added, wherein a handful of similar profiles are referenced for comparison and evaluation. The goal of this research is to produce a profile with a wider perspective which is also well supported by sources and respects the various versions held by different descendants.

The co-author of "Frank L.M. Wolford & Laura May Green, Their Ancestors and Descendants" has replied to my request for her latest info on Joseph Green.

"Robert Green felt that Joseph was the son of William based on William's will. Later DNA came into play. There is a match with Old William and a grandson of Joseph, William James Green (son of Isaac Green). See attachment. Also, there was a Nicholas McIntire in close proximity to Old William in Berkeley County

So, what we have in the way of documentation:

Old William's Will

1. Names a son Joseph, deceased

2. Names William Green as Joseph's oldest son

Dinah's will

Does not name children of a deceased son, Joseph, indicates she was probably not his mother. We have a DNA match.

That is it!!! I admit it is not strong evidence. I really cannot confirm Joseph is the son of William. He could be a brother or even a nephew and it would still come up with a match. It would be great if there were more participants for this family in Y-DNA testing.

Do I think this Joseph is the son of Old William? I think it is possible and appears to be probable. Can I state with certainty, No! That leaves us with the problem of Wiki. Because this is a collaborative tree, I would continue to list Joseph with father unknown and put in a note as William as a possible father based on the information above.

Just a side note, there was a Thomas Green in Frederick and later Berkeley county VA/WV who is most likely a contemporary of Joseph. This Thomas relocated to Berkeley county SC. He appears to have had land transactions that are in the same vicinity of a Joseph Green. "

Now we need to put forth the effort to follow up on reinforcing these points with evidence and incorporating it into this profile. Question is whether to try and get it done as soon as possible and hope it eases the merge or whether we just prep it offline and wait to add until after the merge, assuming it happens and the project allows additions.

I am in favor of the suggestion to "continue to list Joseph with father unknown and put in a note as William as a possible father" and see if Southern Pioneers allows.

"Not sure St. George's County is supported by sources. If it is, show me where."

5/15/19 - St. George's is the logical choice, being the residence place and marriage place of his father, William, and birth place of his step-mother, Dinah.

Another note: Anyone want to present the discussion of Joseph being the son of an earlier wife of William? There are a number of compelling inferences and lines of reasoning in favor of a marriage previous to Dinah.

Also, there has been a lot of recent activity on Joseph's profile on FamilySearch.org, some of it positive, some of it less than constructive. I wonder if Joseph's descendants on these and other tree sites have sorted through the variations well enough that it is time to make improvements here. I would invite a contributor, or a team, to start and lead a collaborative project on Joseph Green. This would be automatic with a merge.

Now Data Dr. reports that two profiles for Joseph Green reference the same F-a-G burial memorial, indicating they are duplicates. A comment was posted requesting we initiate a discussion for a merge process.

Not sure why birth location, Province of Maryland, was previously changed to Maryland; I have changed it back to Province of Maryland as Maryland is only correct after the Revolution.

From Wikipedia: The Province of Maryland was an English and later British colony in North America that existed from 1632 until 1776, when it joined the other twelve of the Thirteen Colonies in rebellion against Great Britain and became the U.S. state of Maryland.
