Biography

Robert Green, born abt 1770, was one of the early settlers of western Allegany County, Maryland. son of Robert Green and Hannah Clayton Green.

On January 19, 1802 Robert bought 50-acres of property on the eastern slope of Big Savage Mountain in Garrett County, Maryland in the vicinity of Laurel Run, three miles northwest of Barton, Maryland. In 1812, Robert bought about 40 more acres in this same area.

Robert's great-grandson Francis M. Green noted that when Robert settled near Laurel Run, the area had no turnpikes, no railroads, no stores, and no gristmills. Francis reported a pair of small millstones were found on the property, indicating that the family had ground their grain by hand. He also noted that the family raised what they ate, and made their own clothing from wool and flax.

Robert married first Barbara/Barbary Chambers/Spiker on 26 Aug 1791 in Allegany Co., Maryland. They had 8 children before Robert's first wife Barbary died in October 1838. [1] [2]

Robert married second Elizabeth abt 1840; they had 3 children before Robert's death. On February 19, 1844, Robert and Elizabeth sold their two parcels of land to Jacob Green, Robert's son by Barbary.

In Aug 1849 Robert died at home on Big Savage Mountain. He was buried in the graveyard on the Corbus place; this graveyard lies along Russell Road, northwest of Barton. Robert was survived by his second wife; she was still living in April 1873, in her 70s.
