Biography

Joseph Green was born on 2 or 28 April 1658 to Joseph and Elizabeth (Whitman) Green in Weymouth, Massachusetts.[1]

Before 25 October 1686, Joseph married Anne Turner, daughter of John Turner "the younger" and Ann James of Scituate, on which date John executed his will, bequeathing to his daughter Anne Green £10 m'chantable pay to be paid within twelve months of his decease.[2]

Their marriage was probably before 1685, which was the year their son Joseph's wife was baptized.

18 Apr 1693 -- Joseph and Anne Green of Weymouth to John Hunt, blacksmith of Weymouth, £42:10 current money, 8 acres in Weymouth containing orchard, pasture & arable land, formerly the housing & land of Philip Reed, bounded e. by Stephen French Sen'r, w. by the countryway, n. by Sam'll Humphrey, s. by widow Mary Vining. Wits: Nicholas Whitmarsh Sen'r, Abraham [mark] Blanchers, William Chard.[3]

7 Jan 1694/5 -- Joseph Green, yeoman of Weymouth, with consent of wife Anne, to James Richards, maultster of same, £53 current silver money, 12 acres consisting of upland and fresh meadowish land in Weymouth near & part upon Rose Hill in estate of inheritance in fee simple, bounded by widow Mary Smith, relict of James, w. by James Smith, e. by a way leading to Smiths Hill, n. by James Smith, s. by land formerly of the widow Mary Bicknell, now deceased. Wits: Nathaniel Foord, William Chard.[4]

2 August 1698 or 25 June 1700 -- Joseph Green Senior of Weymouth to Jonathan Torrey of same. Note: there appears to be some monkey business in this deed. It seems to have been prepared as a sale from Joseph Green Senior to Jonathan Torrey on 2 August 1698, which, if it had just stayed that way, would be interpreted as from the proband's father. However, a note at the end of the deed reads in part, "Memorand'm: before signing and sealing the date is altered from the second day of August 1698 to the 25th of June 1700." Joseph's father Joseph's will was presented for probate on 7 June 1700. If the later date was the date of the transaction then it must have been from the son. Of course, the son became Joseph Sr. when his father died (he also having a son named Joseph). Did he scribble in Sr. over Jr. on 25 June 1700 and sell the land he'd already been intending to sell? Or did he decide that Sr. still being true, he could finish selling land that his father had intended to sell after his death as administrator without stating such in the deed? In any case, Joseph sells to Jonathan Torrey, for £38 current silver money, 7 acres in Weymouth in the Lower Plantation lately appertain unto James Ludden and bounded s. on Joseph Pitty's heirs, e. on sd. Joseph Green, w. on Town's Common Land, n. on John Bicknell, and also a way of one rod wide from the forest unto the sd. 7 acres next and adjoyning unto the land of Joseph Pittey's heirs now in possession of widow Sarah Pittey, wood, timer etc., libertys, commodities, etc., the land in indefeasible estate of inheritance in fee simple. Wits: Ephraim Hunt, John Hunt.[5]

By the will of his father, Joseph and his two brothers were each to receive one third of the real and visible estate after the decease of their mother, with whom Joseph was to co-administer the estate. Elizabeth refused executorship, though, and Joseph was made sole executor on 7 June 1700.[6] (Elizabeth died in February 1719/20, which appears to explain the timing of some transactions below.)

13 April 1701 -- Joseph and Anne Green and mother Elizabeth Green, widow, all of Weymouth, to John Shaw Sen'r of Weymouth, £90, a tract 16 acres in Weymouth lately purchased by John Shaw of widow Mary Vining, as appears more fully by a deed passed from the said John Shaw to the said Joseph Green and Elizabeth, the price whereof is £65 and £25 in current silver money, the receipt whereof the sd. Joseph Green and Anne his wife and the sd. Elia: Green doth acknowledge themselves fully satisfied, 20 acres in the range field so-called near the dwelling house of the sd. John Shaw, formerly purchased of Phillip Read and partly of John Blanchers and part thereof was the estate of Joseph Green late of Weymouth deceased, bounded n. on sd. John Shaw and John Randall, w. on John Randall, s. on John Bicknell and John Shaw Junior, e. on the high way, together with all the fence and fences thereunto belonging, wood, trees, etc., reserving only about 5 & 30 rods of land which is Nathaniel Blancher near his house which is included in the aforementioned bounds. Wits: Ezra Whitmarsh, John Green, Edward Bate, John Randall.[7]

8 January 1702/3 -- Joseph and Anne Green of Weymouth to Samuel Bagley, mason of Brantrey [Braintree], £5 current pay, 1/5 part of the third allotment in the land called by the name of Boston Common at a place called Circuits Ordinary in the Brantrey. Wits: Peter Jacob, Susanna [mark] Bennet, Sarah [mark] Randall.[8]

Ann died in September 1711.[9]

Children of John and Anne (Turner) Green:[10]

Only Miriam's birth is recorded in Weymouth. The others are inferred by process of elimination, Joseph and Ann being one of two Green couples in Weymouth at the time, the other headed by his brother John, whose will provides his children's names. Circumstantial evidence includes the probate of Samuel Green, the deed with Jonathan Torrey's father Jonathan Torrey Sr., and that Joseph (III) of Marblehead was co-administrator of the proband's estate.

15 September 1712 -- Joseph Green, yeoman of Weymouth, supposedly with consent of an unnamed wife, to John Randall Jun'r, husbandman of same, £320 bills of credit on the Province, messuage, 16 acres in Weymouth, now in the occupation of the said Randall, bounded e. and s. on sd. Randall, n. and w. upon Town Common, being formerly purchased by the said Green of Thomas Randall and Hannah his wife. Also, 16 acres in the rnagefield of Weymouth, bounded n. on sd. John Randall, w. on Town Common, s. on said John Randall and William Drake, e. on John Shaw and land of the late Joseph Dyer, which said Green purchased of John and Alice Shaw by deed of 13 April 1700. Further, two acres on the west side of the land Joseph Green purchased of the town to straighten his line. In two places within this deed, space is left to name Joseph Green's wife, who would be consenting, but no name is filled in. By the death and marriage and marriage intention records, we wouldn't have expected there to be a wife on 15 September 1712. The deed might have been prepared in anticipation that there would be one, though. Wits: [14]

Joseph Green and Ruth Richards published their intention to marry on 25 October 1712 in Weymouth. There is no certain evidence that this marriage took place, deeds suggest it probably did.[10]

By most appearances, this was Ruth (Bicknell) Richards, recently widowed by James.[15] However, there is a record that "Mrs. Ruth Richards, wife of Mr. James Richards died February the 12 1727/8."[16] The record itself almost appears to have been corrected -- the writing of "Mrs." and "wife of Mr." is quite heavy and appears to be over smudging. If this was Ruth, the widow of James who died in 1711, then why didn't it say widow? Genealogists appear to have concluded this death was of Ruth the widow of James who died in 1711, and if so, then the marriage of Ruth and Joseph Green must not have come off as planned. Alternatively, that death record may truly be of a Ruth who was at the time presently married to a James Richards. If Joseph did marry a Ruth Richards, it appears to have been a short marriage.

10 April 1712 -- Joseph Green of Weymouth to Joseph Lovill of same, £28, 1 3/4 acre of salt marsh in Brantrey bounded e. and s. by the salt river leading to the iron works, n. by the [Luar] Land of Thomas Holbrook and w. by the salt marsh of William Copeland. Wits: John Whitmarsh, Joseph Allen.[17]

Joseph Lovell had married Ruth Richards, the daughter of James and Ruth (Bicknell) Richards, in 1708, which is further evidence that the marriage intention was to Ruth (Bicknell) Richards.

1 June 1714 -- Joseph Green, yeoman of Weymouth to Jacob Turner [lately his brother-in-law], £25, messuage or tenement 1 3/4 acres in Weymouth near the Captt Cove [Captain's Cove], formerly the land of James Ludden, bounded n. on John Bicknell [Ruth (Bicknell)'s brother], s. on Joseph Pitte, e. on the high way, w. on Jonathan Torrey. Wits: Nicholas Byram, Joseph Green Jun'r.[18]

That Joseph was selling land next to John Bicknell appears to be yet further evidence that he married Ruth (Bicknell) Richards. That he was selling it by himself is evidence that if so, she had died by 1 June 1714.

13 April 1716 -- Joseph Green of Weymouth to brother John Green of same, £17, 3 1/2 acres west of the house of sd. John Green, bounded s., w. & n. by sd. John Green, e. by Benja. Richards, with all wood standing or growing upon the same, all privileges/appurtenances. Wits: John Torrey, Wm. Torrey Jun'r.[19]

On 8 February 1717/18, the intention of Joseph Green and Elizabeth Spear of Brantrey to marry was recorded in Weymouth,[10] and on 3 March 1717/18, they married in Brantrey.[20] Elizabeth was Elizabeth (Daniel) Spear, daughter of John and Dorothy (Badcock) Spear and widow of Samuel Spear.

The couple lived in Braintree.

5 March 1719/20 -- Joseph and Elizabeth Green of Brantrey to Jacob Turner of Weymouth, £72, one moiety or full half of an island called Rock Island in Brantrey, that is, the westerly half of sd. island, bounded s. on salt meadow of Benjamin Richards, n. on salt meadow of Capt. John Mills and meadow of Lt. John Cleverly, e. on Edward Capen and Samuel Capen. Wits: Henry Bridgham, John Goldthwait.[21]

17 April 1719 -- Joseph Green of Brantrey and Elizabeth his wife, admx. to the estate of her former husband Samuel Spear of Brantrey, to Edward Capin & Samuel Capin, both of Dorchester, £185 current money, three parcels of land in Brantrey near Haugh's Neck. One 20 acres called Rock Island bounded e. & s. on the sea, n. on salt meadow of Capt. Mills & Lt. Cleverly, w. on salt meadow of Benjamin Richards of Weymouth. Another 4 acres usually called Little Island, bounded n. on salt meadow of Benjamin Richards, e. and s. on salt meadow of Joseph Nash of Weymouth, w. & s.w. on Ebenezer Thayre. Last a piece called Raccoon Island at the eastern end of the afordsd. Rock Island. Wits: Samuel Spear, William Patten [x], Elizabeth Spear [x]. [22]

30 June 1722 -- Joseph Green of Braintree to Samuel Spear Jun'r of Cape Cod, £10, 1/6 part of undivided land in Haugh's Neck in Braintree, commonly known by the name of Market Pond, the whole pond containing 6 or 7 acres, bounded n.w. on the beach adjacent to the great hill, all other parts of sd. land belonging to the heirs of Samuel Spear dec'd; also a 1/6 part of all undivided upland in said neck; also 1/18 part of said undivided upland and pond, with all rights and liberties. Wits: John Daniel, Ebenezer Nightingal.[23]

Vital records of Braintree record that an Elizabeth Spear died on 9 October 1725.[24] A Find A Grave profile for Hancock Cemetery in (now) Quincy, which lacks a photo of a grave, purports to be hers and also gives this date.[25] That said the deed from Joseph Green to Samuel Spear Jr. of 30 June 1722 bears all the hallmarks of one which would be effected after Elizabeth, his wife, died -- if she was living, one would expect that she would, at minimum, be recorded as giving her consent for such a sale.

In any case, Elizabeth had certainly died by 20 June 1726, on which date Joseph married, last, Mary (Vesey) Penniman, widow of Moses and daughter of William and Mary (Saunders) Vesey.[26]

Joseph Green died on 21 November 1733 in Braintree.[27]

On 1 January 1733, letters of administration on the estate Joseph Green, late of Braintrey, were granted to widow Mary Green and Joseph Green, mariner of Marblehead, with sureties Henry Turner, physician of Braintrey and Nathaniel Hasey of Boston.[28] Henry may have beem a nephew of the younger Joseph's mother, Ann (Turner) Green, but he was certainly married to be Eleanor Vesey, Mary's sister.[29] It is interesting that Nathaniel Hasey was surety for Joseph's estate. The Hasey family (see Nathaniel's profile on We Relate) was associated with a different set of Greens. Nathaniel's aunt Esther Hasey was married to Henry Green, a son of Thomas Green of Malden,[30] and there is a deed for land in Rumney Marsh from a William Hasey who may have been Nathaniel's brother to Joseph and Daniel Green, children of this couple -- seemingly a cousin-to-cousin transaction.[31] There is no known relationship between those Greens and the proband's Greens, although the Hasey connection might be a lead.

Mary might be the Mary Green whose intention to marry Ebenezer Ware of Needham was published in Weymouth on 4 August 1734,[10] but if so, they did not marry, because William Vesey, Mary's brother and first Rector of Trinity Church, New York City, left £25 to his sister Mary Green of Braintree, by his will dated 1 May 1746.[32] Indeed, there is no certain evidence that this marriage of a Mary Green and Ebenezer Ware happened at all. If it did, said Mary must have died soon thereafter, because Ebenezer was married to (one of his several wives) Mehetable by 14 February 1738/9.[33]

26 March 1735 -- Mary Green and Joseph Green, administrators to the estate of Joseph Green, late of Braintree, by power granted by Justices of the Superior Court of Judicature held at Boston on 2nd Tuesday of February 1734 to sell the decedent's dwelling house and land, to Robert Lamont, clothier of Braintree, £100, 2 ares with half of a well and part of a dwelling house thereon in Braintree, by the brook which runs from the old mill pond, bounded e. by Ruth and Eleanor Penniman, n. on the brook aforesaid, w. on a strip purchased by the said Joseph Green deceased of Benjamin Webb, s. on the way that leads into the Common, the said part of the dwelling house containing one lower room with all the room above and below it, being divided from the other part by a straight line through middle of the stack of chimnies, as it was mutually agreed upon between the said Joseph Green deceased and the said Ruth and Eleanor Penniman, and by a good deed of partition bearing date 14 April 1732. Also, the strip of land purchased of Benjamin Webb, about 1/2 acre, bound e. on the land herein before granted, w. on the west end of a small pond or hole of water usually called the Turtle Pond, n. on the floom or stream that runs out of the sd. old pond and s. on a straight line to be drawn and extend from the fence now standing on the premises near a certain spring as far as the west end of the Turtle Pond, parallel to and four rods distant from the floom; the spring aforesaid now improved by Deacon Samuel Savel to be kept clear and running freely at all times and free passage thereto through a convenient gate to be made by the sd. Robert Lamont and maintained by such as shall improve the said spring, and liberty of improving it for water for one family (excepting the use of it for cattle) in such manner as may be least to the damage of the said Robert Lamont.... Wits: Anna Quincy, Elizabeth Quincy.[34]

28 March 1735 -- Mary Green of Braintree, widow of Joseph Green, late of Braintree, to Robert Lamont, clothier of Braintree, £41 and for divers good causes me thereunto moving, release all claim and demand I now have in my lifetime thirds of part of a dwelling house and land on the w. side thereof containing about 2 acres in the North Precinct in Braintree, being part of the estate whereof my late husband the said Joseph Green died seized. Wits: Nathaniel Belcher, John Speare.[35]
