Biography

Burrell Green and Anne Poythress married before December 1721.[1] His wife Anne, daughter of Francis and Rebecca Poythress, was born before 1682 in Virginia.[2]

Burrell died before 19 September 1733, which was the date that the Surry County court recorded an inventory of his estate. Ann Green was listed as "Administratrix".[3]

Residences

Surry County, Virginia: Burrell Green and wife Ann and Francis Poythress "all of Surry" in a land transaction 11 December 1721.[4] (Anne's father Francis Poythress had died by 1721, so this is probably a reference to her brother.)

Research Notes

Detached son "Lewis J. Green Sr. or IV" (Green-15176) and wife Eleanor Brewster Dunn (Dunn-651) on 7 September 2020.

Detached daughter "Sarah (Green) Thweat" (Green-714) on 4 July 2023.

Warnings when trying to save (18 Feb. 2023):

  • Check the data: A child's birth date (Green-187 born 1668) should not be before a parent was 13 years old (mother Grigg-995 born 1668).
  • WikiTree+ Suggestions: Unused Span Anchors (Smith, Trial, BatteChart, Poole)
  • WikiTree+ Suggestions: Error? Mother too young or not born
The date warning was fixed by changing the birth year from "after 1668" to "about 1681" (but . I also moved top-of-profile text and some of the bio to the research notes (the following "Estimated Birth Year" section).

Estimated Birth Year: Born about 1681 - 1680 still triggered "mother too young" warning, although it is more likely that either she was born earlier than 1668 or that the source of his given name was not her mother's maiden.

  • His WikiTree profile, prior to 20 March 2023, had his birth "before 1668", with text saying "born after 1668/around 1670 in Charles City County, Virginia.[2]
  • Smith shows Burwell/Burrell Green, b. ca. 1681[5]
  • R. Batte Bolling Papers have his birth about 1680 in Surry County, Virginia.[6]
Smith also lists Burwell as the son of "Lewis Green II" who was born "ca. 1645/1650 ... d. 28 Apr 1730, Prince George Co, VA; m 1st to possibly a Miss Parham or Miss Grigg; m 2nd to Susannah Grigg, daughter of William & Miss (Burwell) Grigg, b. 1668, Baly’s Creek, Westopher Parish, Charles City, VA. Lewis Green II & his first wife had children, the total that are attributed to each wife is unknown."

Lead

"follow the land"... a Water Mill?
D.B. 1746-1749, p. 450, "Burrell Green of Albemarle Parish, Surry Co., VA, sells 100 acres, land devised by will of Lewis Green , of Prince George Co., who is dec. grandfather of sd.Burrell and his brother Lewis Green, whereon was a Water*Mill.[7]

It being a moiety (half) of land devised by will of Lewis Green (II) of Prince George Co. who is deceased, grandfather of sd.Burrell and his brother Lewis Green, whereon was a water mill.[7]

note - from a private message to Liz, 18 Feb. 2023: "The Lead on the water mill likely belongs to Burwell Green (abt. 1718 Surry VA-1788 Surry VA) s/o William Green (1690-1749) s/o Lewis Green (1645-1730)."

Burrell Green married Ann Bartholomew, the daughter of Charles Bartholomew and Rebecca Coggin Poythress Bartholomew. Ann was not a Poythress. I have seen no proof that Burrell and Ann Green had any children. Is there proof?

You've overwhelmed me with info. Thank you!! (Sincerely!)

If I read all that correctly, I need to detach Sarah (Green) Thweatt from Burwell & Ann (Poythress) Green* and revise the text that says she is.

Cheers, Liz

P.S. I'll go with "Option 2" for Sarah (Green) Thweatt & attach her as daughter of Lewis Green III (abt.1680-bef.1747) & Sarah Unknown (abt.1685-), unless you have info that argues that's wrong too?

* after detaching Green-714, I'll no longer be related to Burwell & Ann, so I'll orphan this profile and removed myself from Anne's. Anything else I should do before I go? (e.g., send me a private message or a trusted list request from Ann's profile if you'd like to be added as a manager before I remove myself; let me know if you'd also like me to add you as a PM for Burwell's profile rather than just adopt it once it's orphaned.)

the other set of parents had a Sarah attached & comments on her profile indicate no sources to support that they had a daughter named Sarah. So Sarah (Green) Thweatt is now parentless.

I've also removed myself as manager for both Burwell & Ann.

The Lead on the water mill likely belongs to Burwell Green (abt. 1718 Surry VA-1788 Surry VA) s/o William Green (1690-1749) s/o Lewis Green (1645-1730).

Send me a private message. I have documents you will love!

Is it possible that an alternate name for Burwell Green (Green-187) could be Lewis Burwell Green, born abt 1672 in Charles City, Virginia, British Colonial America? Lewis Burwell Green said to have been married to Frances Gilliam. Frances Gilliam was mother of Lewis Green SR. (IV)
posted by Martha (Berg) Allen
I doubt it. This Burwell Green married Anne Poythress before 1720; she died after 1733. The profile for Lewis Green "Sr. or IV" has him born 1720.

From the profile of Lewis Green "Sr. or IV" (which has the middle initial J?) -

One researcher has written that Lewis Burwell Green, a prominent planter in Gloucester Co., Virginia in 1720 may have been the grandfather of this Lewis Sr. Most researchers do not follow this line and place Lewis as the son of Robert Green.

I'll detach his profile from this Burwell Green.

just noticed that his parents are siblings. Mother Susannah was added in 2018. I didn't look to see if either set of grandparents changed more recently or not (I like to think I would have caught this quicker than 2 years if his aunt was added as his mother in 2018).

update - It looks like changes this month is what caused the WikiTree incest, but I can't quite follow all the changes. I've added doing a space page for this family to my to-do list. (Mother added in 2018 had been Susannah Grigg - now she's Susannah Green.)

update: the siblings shown by Smith (Volume 6 link) are the children of this Burrell's brother Lewis (noted as "Lewis III" by Smith).

hmm. Seems Burrell, Lewis & Sarah were siblings, children of Lewis. (Sarah m Thweatt... sister, not daughter). see p 25 http://www.crossedbrushstudio.com/windowsintoourpast/Volume-pdf/Volume6.pdf & other sources.

this pdf (which took forever to load for me) listed Sarah and Rebecca as daughters of Burwell & Ann (Poythress) Green (see p 168 of 377), with Sarah m Miles Thweatt and the following for Rebecca (but no sources): Rebecca Green was born about 1743 in Virginia. She married Ludson Worsham about 1762 in Virginia, son of George Worsham IV and Sarah Irby. He was born about 1742 in Henrico Co., Virginia
