Biography

Lydia Lee Green, known as Lilla (and later as Noanie by her grandchildren), was born at White Elm Street, Ipswich, Suffolk on 11 December 1874, the daughter of William Green and Lydia (Lee) Green (1841-1928).[1][2] She was baptised on 30 September 1876 at Chelmsford, Essex.[3]
In 1891, at the age of 16, Lilla was working as a Dressmaker.[4]
On 25 July 1898 Lilla married William Orme in Congleton, Cheshire.[5][6][7] The story passed on in the family is that Lilla, was a governess to the "Benoit children" (Lydia's cousin, Ellen Lydia "Nelly" Clark married Louis Armand Benoit in 1894) [8] and William Orme used to cycle over to her at the weekends. They 'courted' by Rudyard Lake (about 7 miles from Congleton) - hence their first child was named William Rudyard.[9][10]
They went on to have eight children altogether and Lilla recorded their births, and other events, in her Anniversary Book.
In 1901 the family were still in Congleton, living at 22 West Road.[11] Their first two children, William Rudyard (1899) and Freda Marjorie (1900) were both born in Congleton.
Their third child, Laurence Lee Duncalf, was born in Middleton, Lancashire. It is not currently known whether the family lived in Middleton.
By 1905, when their fourth child, Yestin Jack, was born, the family had moved to Woodbridge, Suffolk, where they remained[12][13] until about about 1915, when the family moved from Woodbridge to Dronfield, Derbyshire, where William took up a new job.[14]
William Orme died at Dronfield in 1921, aged 47 years.
In 1939, Lydia, a widow, was living with her daughter Marjorie and her family in Sheffield, Yorkshire.[15]
Lilla passed away in Sheffield on 6 September 1952, aged 77 years.[16][17]
