William John was the middle child of 5. August 1914 his father is called to duty for the First World War, gunner R M A, and posted to France. October 1916 Bills mother died, and the siblings are placed in the Portsea Island Workhouse. On the 1939 Register he is recorded as a lodger at 113, Grangehill Rd, Woolwich. Bill married Gladys Maud Curtis on 10 July 1943 in Woolwich, Kent, Gladys had children from previous marriage, they called him "Laddie". Bill may have been raised as a Barnardo boy. Bill died December 1994 in Bexley, Kent. Update, 1921English Census records Willian John and his dad William James as lodgers with his uncle James John Perry at 20, Langley Rd, Buckland, Portsmouth.
