Biography

James Greenall was born in 1885 in Haydock. He was the son of James Greenall and Elizabeth (Eden) Greenall. He was christened on February 19th 1886 at St Thomas's Church in Golborne (Anglican). The family's address was given as Golborne, and his father's occupation as collier.

By April 5th 1891, James's family was living in Princess Street, Pemberton. His father was working as a coal miner. There were three children, all born in Haydock - Thomas (aged 14, and working as a drawer in the coal mine), Elizabeth (9) and James (6).

By March 31st 1901, they were living in Golborne Road, Ashton-in-Makerfield. James's father was working as a coal hewer. Thomas was no longer living with his parents. Elizabeth, now 19, was working as a pit brow girl; James, now 15, was a lasher in the coal pit (an underground worker). Another pit brow girl, Mary Morden, was boarding with them.

By April 2nd 1911, only James was left with his parents; James and his father were both working as coal hewers. They were still living in Golborne Road.
