Biography

Thomas Greenall was born May 26th 1876 in Pemberton, Lancashire. He was the son of James Greenall and Elizabeth (Eden) Greenall. He was christened June 2nd 1878 at St Matthew's Church in Highfield, Pemberton (Anglican), also known as Pemberton Colliery Iron Church, along with his younger sister Sarah Ann. Their father's occupation was recorded as collier, and the family's address as Pemberton Valley, Pemberton.

Thomas's maternal grandmother died in the first quarter of 1880 in Warrington district, at the age of 60. She was buried on February 13th 1880 at St James's Churchyard in Haydock (Anglican).

By April 3rd 1881, Thomas's family were living in Pemberton Valley Tunstall Lane, Pemberton, Lancashire. His father James was working as a coal miner, and there were four children - Mary Ellen (7), Thomas (4), Sarah Ann (3) and Alice (1). The two older ones had been born in Haydock, the younger ones in Pemberton.

Alice died in 1882 at the age of two.

Sarah Ann died in 1889 at the age of eleven.

Mary Ellen was married in 1890.

By April 5th 1891, they were living in Princess Street, Pemberton. James was working as a coal miner; there were three children remaining in the household - Thomas (14), Elizabeth (9) and James (6). Thomas was working as a drawer in the coal mine.

Thomas married Jane Pye on February 18th 1899 at St Peter's Church in Parr (Anglican). Thomas was 22 and Jane was 20, and neither had been married before. The fathers were James Greenall and James Pye.

By March 31st 1901, Thomas and Jane were living in Blackbrook Road, Haydock. Thomas was working as a coal hewer, and they had one child, Elizabeth Ellen, who was one year old.

By April 2nd 1911, they were living in St Helens. Thomas was still working as a coal hewer.
